the most important thing, in my opinion, is to set yourself a goal, or several goals.
You can't collect "everything", so you're well-advised to decide what you're most interested in, and go for that.
And along your journey, read any book, magazine, or forum, on your topic, that you can find.
Your knowledge will make your collection more interesting, and more special, and more satisfying.
"buy the book, before you buy the coin" is good advice.

thanks for the info. not a rich person so will most likely be looking for coins I can get a return from to keep the hobby going. and keeping a few for the kids, this started from buying a replacement coin, which I'm was told to keep it as its way better than the lost coin it was meant to replace.
the 2 proof coins above all showed to be worth about double what I paid from my searches before buying, but I could be wrong lol

Addiction is good. Stimulates the brain. Harnessing this is tricky. You need a goal.
Do you have a plan? Mine started out as collecting each Australian coin in circulation. Then turned to the error / mint location. This lead me to my local coin shop... From there I have discovered no bounds and I have expanded from here to every coin in the world in circulation in my birth year.

You do not have to be rich to collect. Have you heard of noddling?

since I joined this site I have learnt about noodling, went through the money box and found about 5 coins with small mintages compared to most years. thinking about giving it a go this week if I have a spare $20 is going on 5 cent pieces.

Perhaps you have OCCCD?

I like to think of it as a mild obsession; addiction sounds so harsh, like smoking or gambling.

Noodling? You mean catching catfish with your bare hands?

Dr Phil says that as long as we don't break the law, or jeopardize our relationships, we collectors have a fetish, rather than an addiction. I like Dr Phil ... he understands us.
Erkle: "... started out as collecting each Australian coin in circulation" - that's fine. But you might consider whether you want those silly NCLT. I stick to circulation coins, but that's a personal choice.

I have been ignoring the NCLT. Does not interest me. Enough to collect in the world without having to collect the things that are only issued for collectors!

As far as I'm concerned any coin that isn't fit for circulation is just a medallion.
