Only find I can think of was 12 years ago, a 1942 Mercury dime half-buried in my backyard. |

When I was younger, I used to walk around bare footed as much as possible. Because of this, it was natural for me to scan the ground in front of me much more than most people, to avoid minor cuts etc. I even went to elementary (primary) school regularly, bare footed. That was in urban Sydney in the late 1950's.
I used to hang around the ticket office at the local railway station, and quite often could pick coins that had been dropped by anxious passengers that were in a hurry.
The result of this is that I was always finding coins, and even the occasional banknote. In later years, while being booted, the habit of scanning the ground in front of me was still yielding profitable results!

hmmm, so no one seems to have found very many collectible coins. Am I just lucky? hehe

I look down wherever I go. I haven't found any collectible coins yet, but I always find jewelry and cash money. So far I've found:
Several gold earrings.
1 gold chain.
various pocket change
5$ and 20$
And the doozy, 1 18k gold sapphire and diamond tennis bracelet appraised at over 8,000$
I gave it to my mom. I was 17 years old when I found that bracelet, and I had no idea what to do with it. At least I didn't give it to my ex-girlfriend.

By me you couldn't find a nut, bolt, washer, nail or anything made of metal on the ground. I've had neighbors have items stolen out of their yards that are made of metal. Next door they stole his chain link fence gate a few weeks ago. Also a metal oil drain pan right out of his back yard. Two houses down two Aluminum ladders vanished. I've seen people dragging magnets on the ground for nuts, bolts and nails or anything metal. The day before garbage pickup, people go through the garbage looking for metal. COINS? Not a chance unless they were made of wood. |

It seems that the only things I see on the ground are a few Zincolns that are better left where they are.  |

Oh, and we Finns nicely carry all our waste metals to recycling bins for free  There would be a paradise for those metal hunters in our backyards  |

In 7-9th grade, I found pencils and an occasional pen in the school halls. Sometimes several a day, hundreds over the year. Mom thot I might be stealing them, but I assured her they were just all over the place.
Not as good as the guy who finds diamonds in the NYC sidewalk cracks, but I never needed a pencil for a test!

I have found lots of coins on the ground that are currently residing in my collection, but they have little or no value aside form the sentimental kind.

I never used to bother picking up pennies off the ground, but now that I hoard copper cents, I do it all the time. Must look pretty pathetic--a middle-aged guy stooping to pick up a penny on the sidewalk. I found a '61 Lincoln lying in the corner of an elevator yesterday.

I thought of this thread when I was in Steak n Shake with my husband earlier - we were sitting down and I saw a penny under the booth. I had to wrangle around and try to get it (much to the chagrin of my husband) and it was a 1997 Zincoln.  My Dad found a Mercury dime after a flood one time. I'd love to know the history behind that coin. |

A year or so ago I found a 1906 IHC in the register at my business. Stuck it in my pocket. Later that night we're leaving a restaurant and I pull my hand out of my pocket and it went flying into the grass. I looked for at least 5 minutes but couldn't find it. Even went back the next day. I still wonder if anyone has found it and if they realized what it was. Or if they wondered how it came to be there. |
