Mathieu, you've probably already thought of this... When you crack out a coin from its slab, make sure to take quality, readily identifiable photos of it in the slab BEFORE doing so. Good that you've obviously done so here... If you ever go to sell on ebay or elsewhere, it will only help. |

Yes, I did it before to be sure, if I ever resell it it will be better for the buyer / for decertification.
Actually, this picture was after opening the slab, I manage to not break it (unlike the previous PCGS one I destroyed in half)

Very nice original early Zacatecas piece, Mathieu. Well done! Here's a fun historic tidbit Pradeau mentions in Numismatic History of Mexico about these: Quote:
Don Ignacio Lopez Rayon, who with the capture of Generalissimo Hidalgo had become the titular head of the insurrection, entered the Cit of Zacatecas April 15, 1811. Rayon ordered the rich mine of Quebradilla thrown open to all who chose to work it, and one-third of the metal mined was given to the laborers who extracted it. With this incentive thousands toiled day and night, and a large amount of silver ore was thus secured, which Rayon caused to be coined in the Zacatecas mint, using the L.V.O. dies found there. General Rayon was forced to evacuate the city May 21, 1811.. |

Thanks TK, it's my second 1811 Zacatecas, the other one being the later "moneda provisional" with a Ferdinand VII portrait (If I remember well I posted that one already)
Do you have a numeric version of the Pradeau, or an old book ?
Seems like it has many very interesting history pieces, which I'm often missing.
I saved this along with the other datas on the coin in my database - thanks :)

Here is the little brother of this one, the 2 reales 1811 LVO. Check out the shield of this one, where the lions were replaced by flowers.   |

Thanks! I fixed the error about flowers. The CoinQuest site attracts non-collectors, usually heirs who have inherited a collection. Some good coins have passed through, but a ton of fakes, also. When I'm stumped, which happens a lot, I go here, to CoinTalk, and to ForumAncientCoins for real experts. Amazing sites! I want to publish an article on Spanish Colonials on the CoinQuest site. Do you know of a place where I can get images of all the different mint marks? I am starting to make my own image, but it is a lot of work. In fact, I have not found too many good sites on Spanish Colonials. Thanks for the heads up about the experts here. |

MathieuMa - In an earlier post you asked about a numeric version of the Pradeau, or an old book. Not sure if you had any replies. My father was a collector of Spanish Colonial pieces, particularly from Mexico. In his library, he has many books. The ones I recall him referencing the most were from Grove, c 1981. The 1811 8 Reales LVO, Royal Arms (your pic) was assigned #2071. The two reales in this post, local arms, #2058. He also had the Spanish bible, Las Monedas Espanolas, Cayon & Castan, where the numbers for these items were 12047, and 11640 respectively.
He has Pradeau's book, c 1938, but it doesn't appear to have any numbering. There are plates in the back of the book that are numbered. For the 8R it was plate XII, Number 2. For the 2R it was plate XII, Number 3.

Thanks :) I had no reply regarding those old books, but I have some references.
The one I'm using the most is the Calico, 2008 paper edition - which covers most of those and is very accurate (more than the Cayon).
It's not specialized like some on a particular period (mexican war for independence for example) - hence it's missing some details on such periods.
