Cha-ching! Maybe I need to find a friend with a "dirty" house.
I don't know Canadian coinage, but I would think that there is some numismatic value in the "stash"...worse case scenario...it has melt value!

Looks like a nice little group of silver. Most will only bring in melt value to get a grasp of what each coin is worth melt http://www.(124) Not Allowed - Auto-Removed .com to get a grasp of what these coins are worth if more than melt http://www.coinsandcanada.com

Canadian coins prior to 1920 are Sterling silver (.925). From 1920-1966 are 80% silver. 1967 about half are 80% and the other half are 50%. 1968 could be 50% (non-magnetic) or 0% (nickel steel therefore magnetic). Rule of thumb for the 80% silver is $1 = 0.6 troy oz. Check http://www.jandm.com/script/getitem...CID=5&PID=20 for the sets in the plastic packages. Also check http://www.coins-of-the-uk.co.uk/values/ for the British coins. http://www.bestcoin.com/united-stat...ng-guide.htm for the US (personally I find the prices here overstated. Go with about 60%). Try http://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces9195.html or http://www.ngccoin.com/poplookup/Wo...e-Guide.aspx for world coins. A honest dealer will probably pay about 50% of list price for the coins worth more than their silver content. You might get 60% or a bit more for the 'melt' coins that are only really worth their silver content. For a very rough guide when you're looking things up: 1. the 1966 silver dollar in the middle of the 2nd photo on the first link is probably MS60+ 2. the old quarters in the 4th picture on the first link are probably around G4 3. the sets shown in the 6th picture on the first link are only worth a few bucks (see the J&M link above).

p.s. Some of those Newfoundland and other Maritime coins can be worth a bit as well. Hard to judge grade from the pictures. Assuming the NB 1864 20 cents was VG8 it would list at $30. $60 for F12. The NFLD 1882 20 cents at VG8 would be $16.
I'm in Orleans, Ottawa.

Would you want to take a look at them this weekend? I am in Ottawa until Monday and would be glad to drive over. Although I would understand if you have Easter plans.

Sounds like mostly billion value. The good news is, that with with bullion (melt) silver, the more you have, the better price you get. I sometimes buy collections, but frankly, I prefer numismatic items. The best buyer of melt silver around these parts is Sean Issacs (Alliance Coins) in Almonte, outside of Ottawa. But, before you go to a dealer, you should find someone knowledgable enough to help you separate your coins into two piles: 1) silver melt and 2) numismatic items. Then, sell them separately. More often than not, it is the grade that separates bullion versus collectable value, so whomever helps you should know how to grade.
Who knows, maybe you will pick up the coin-collecting bug yourself!

Oh the coins aren't mine. My friend is selling her family home to help pay for her mom's alzheimers care. Thats why we were emptying it. I think they might keep the dollars or at least most of them just because they are a decent investment and probably pretty easy to sell as a set if they ever need to. But the rest is probably simplest to turn into cash right away.

I just saw your reply Dan. This weekend, there is a small coin show in Ottawa. Sunday morning to mid-afternoon, at the RA Centre on Riverside Drive (adjacent to the Ottawa Airport Parkway). There are a couple dealers there who may make you an offer, and Sean Isaacs will be there from Alliance Coins. At least at that venue, you will have options.

I normally go (as a collector), but being Easter Sunday, I'll probably not be there.

HI Dan
Welcome to the forum.
Some of your foreign coins would also be valuable- I see some that are probably silver, and some older ones in good condition.- Iraq, Switzerland,India, plus Great Britain. Good Luck with your work.

If SPP says that those are the particulars I would be pretty sure those are the particulars. It is probably not a big enough show to be publicized on the web.
