I recently picked this up for $1 but the loonie in it is looking pretty ugly.

Is this packaging known to cause PVC damage? I have a similar one issued in 2001 and the coin looks fine.

That's ugly!
---Looks like some kind of liquid penetrated the package or it was contaminated with something before packaging and festered. Al's it takes is a little nick by rough handling.
---Something like touching a silver dollar with sweaty fingers and putting it away then seeing your print on your coin, after some time.

Looks to me like it could be a plating error. I had a loonie that looked quite similar and sold it for $48 Canadian.

Looks like I may have been exposed to some extreme heat.

Whatever it is, it is very sad looking. If it is still sealed though, would a TPG have to call it MS? Just a thought....

I had it under the microscope and couldn't see that there was any breach in the plastic. I was therefore thinking that the damage was caused by the plastic itself.

Hi there. From time to time PVC can debilitate a coin's quality with regard to the general appearance.

However, if a coin of any metal composite, is kept in a 2x2 holder that has 'breathing space', then there can be no damage.

Poly Vinyl Chloride has a shelf life of about 100 years if it is treated correctly. The 'mylar' holders are safe as long as the elements are avoided, and above all is sunlight. If you keep your 2x2 (mylars) in adverse conditions, the plastic will break down. If PVC is stored properly, your coins will live for a very long time. This is all I know.

Looks like PMD. It could also be some kind of a spill of chemicals during the minting process.

Do you mean that Ugly sweeped your email? Or was there an automatic email that bounced back saying that your email wasn't successfully sent?
I hope that he is fine lately.
