Welcome! I would guess AU55 or so and well worth getting it graded.

It looks good from first glance. I'd go AU55/58 on it.

I was thinking AU-50 but from one of the pictures the coin appears to have hairlines and that may cause it get a details grade. Nice coin either way!

With the varied photos in different lighting, I'm inclined to drop my grade to AU-50/53 now. TOo many little dings on the face of liberty to be a high end AU coin, but I still don't see anything to make me suspect it is not the genuine article.

Will you send it in to ngc or pcgs? CC gold is cool!

I have never got a coin graded before although I have bought NGC & PCGS graded coins. Do you recommend any particular one ?
Thanks Nilesh

Great coin! AU53 would be my grade. CC gold is tough. Oh yeah, welcome to the CCF :-)

NGC has that awesome clear view holder plus, great optical plastic. That's where I send my coins. I use to be PCGS exclusively but, they rubbed me the wrong way. They are both good though.

Are any of those dings behind Liberty's head raised? Or are they all incused?

The first photos hide whatever luster it has. They also minimize the hairline scratches. The Photobucket shots show some obvious diagonal hairlines on the obverse which are most likely evidence of an abrasive cleaning. The Photobucket reverse shot does show some luster, enough I would think to qualify for an AU-50 details grade. Strike seems a bit weak, particularly on some of the obverse stars and the rays below STATES. The mintmark letters appear filled. These features could be normal and the coin genuine. Or, they might be indicators that the coin is a fake. That potential is why this piece should indeed be certified to confirm authenticity. If it is real I would expect it to grade as Genuine at PCGS or AU Details, cleaned at NGC or ANACS. Since it likely won't slab problem-free I would probably go with ANACS since they are excellent for authentication, you don't need to join any club, and the cost will be a bit less. For comparison, here are photos of my 1890-CC $20 coin which I purchased as an NGC AU-55 and later crossed it to PCGS at the same grade. A quick comparison with your coin does not show any obvious differences in date or lettering which are places that counterfeiters often screw up. Hopefully your coin is genuine and your chosen grading service will confirm that fact. Carson City gold is special, no matter the grade or date. Enjoy!

Confirming the weight and diameter should be enough since this date is common. It should weigh 33.4 grams and be 34mm in diameter. At the very least you'll know it's gold.
I would send it to ANACS, PCGS, or NGC regardless because the CC mintmark commands a $1,000 premium.

Jaobler thanks for posting your 1890 CC photos. That's a beautiful coin you have :)
Steve the two dings look as if they are incused when I checked using a loupe.
Thanks everyone. I appreciate all your valuable thoughts.
