For purchases, I am a hunter. I have a specific list of things I want.
For circulation finds, I am a gatherer. I tend to keep many of the nicer finds, even duplicates, because I know how unappreciated modern coinage is.

I print out a wantlist and bring it along to coin shows. Then promptly forget all about the list and buy whatever catches my fancy. So I guess I'm a gatherer with delusions of being a hunter.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

I am absolutely a hunter. Usually a "trap and release" hunter - not much actually stays in my collection - but I know what I'm looking to flip.

I am definitely a gatherer. My main source for coins is pocket change, so I take what I can get. Also, I'm rather new to collecting, so I need everything for any specific collection I start.

Gatherer most of the time. Hunter some of the time. When I go to shows, I'll pick up coins that I like and feel are well priced.

When I get in the car I'm a hunter. When I enter the shop I'm a hunter. 1 metre in I'm a gatherer. Hopeless every time. Its either the money burning a hole in my pocket or all the shiny things or a combination of both secretly I love it though

Usually a gatherer...if I see something that's shiny and pretty and for a great price I'll go for it. I seem to have coin ADHD. Even when I'm really interested in one coin or type, I can't stay forcus on it to long.... I really like ancient indo-greek coins.. ooooooo....but look at those Mercury dimes. oh wait....look at that 1816 austrian coin for in great shape for only 3 bucks...well, I should get that. Uncleaned ancients romans are fun, may as well see if there are any good deals on those... continue the cycle.

Hunter for the most part. I know what collectors like, so I concentrate on those. My collection is well diversified, with copper being king.

Awesome question! As a new collector, I'm a gatherer right now. I bought my first coin and awaiting for the next in the series to be released. Next year I'll be more of a hunter looking for specific older coins such as a pre-A.D. (greek/roman), Asia-Pacific regional coins, and deciding on my first silver & gold pieces. Of course, the number of coins always comes down to budget.

I'm afraid that I am mostly a gatherer. When I come across a coin of opportunity, even if I have the coin (year and mintmark) I will keep all copies that I can put my hands on. That is why I have so many Susan B's, Sacs, and Eisenhower's. I currently have three seperate caches of State Quarters completed, along with a couple albums in procee for the ATB's. I would imagine that there are a number of other forum members who are currently working on both a proof and circulated version of the same set of modern coinage. So in way all these individuals are gatherers (under another term(s) they could be considered either packrats or accumulators.

I would probably count more as a gatherer. I don't really have any specific coin in mind that I want, but I am currently restricting myself to getting coins from new countries each time I go looking, so my collection would become more spread over the globe.
Who knows, maybe at some point in the future I would be sad that I didn't pick up some coin I saw because I was interested in getting coins of a different country...

I tend to gather good deals. Keep the wheat and sell the chaff. I don't need to be the owner of 50,000 Wheat-back Pennies or own 500 dateless Buffalo nickels. I don't try to complete sets or compete with other collectors. Same with when I buy other antiques or collectibles. I don't search for old toys but if I find one I like and it's priced to sell, then I'm a buyer. My house is decorated in Early Yard Sale and my coin collection is a lot of 'this and that' but really nice 'this and that.' Like matthewvincent, if I stumble over a sweet deal, who am I to say no. I'm fairly new here but will post more goodies as time allows.
