I agree and disagree with the previous answers. Mercury dimes have seen quite a bit of grade inflation over the years. I agree that this coin is currently in the VF range, although I don't see TPG going higher than VF-20 even now. Many years ago it was pretty much impossible for a Merc to break out of fine range with any of the reverse lines blending into one another, which this coin has.

Even though I wasn't even alive to personally witness different grading standards I think they make more sense. Some very early slabs are still around. Currently, not enough progress is made going from VG to VF IMO.

If this coin were sitting in my own collection, I would probably call it an F-15.

Like I said, I could buy VF-20, but I'm shocked Macmercury went to VF-30. A choice VF without even clear verticals? XF-40 should already have strong diagonal lines, while this coin has them nearly obliterated. You're usually pretty old school with these. You actually undergraded a Merc I put up for opinions about a year ago compared to what TPG eventually called it. I figured you were gonna call it a F-12.

I'd say that's a 30 all day long if you sent it in.

Agree with VF, too much line detail on reverse for it to go F

This coin is probably valuable enough that it would be worth sending it in to get graded. The OP should try it.

I know the official ANA standards are not the end all of grading, but it is as good a guideline as we have. Here is the breakdown for VF-20;

"Three-quarters of details still show in feathers."
I really only see about 2/3

"Hair is worn, but bold" and "some details in hair braid are visible"
the word "some" is open to too much interpretation, but there is nothing bold about anything on this obverse.

"wear shows on two diagonal bands, but most details are visible"
it falls short, most details are not visible

"all vertical lines are visible, details in branch are clear"
branch looks fine, but all vertical lines are not clear, particularly between the midpoint and lower diagonal.

in addition; VF-30 on that one matter has "all vertical lines are sharp"
that's obviously not true.

This coin simply should fall short of VF-20 and come in at F-15. That being said, with the grade inflation and with this being a key date I do think NGC/PCGS would call it a VF-20. If the OP sends it in, I'd make a friendly wager with anyone that it doesn't see VF-30 (or higher). Such a grade would be plain wrong on this coin.

A solid VF20, might go higher, but no lower for sure.
