If the diameter is slightly smaller, then that is a pretty strong argument for an acid bath.

Too bad. I guess I don't have anything special here. I guess that I'll just hang onto it as an interesting piece.

These must be quite common for 1980...

Nitric acid bath. I used to do pennies (in the States) in my chemistry classes for the students to see. They came out looking the same (except design of course).

Here are a few more to use as data points.

First a 1981 that looks quite similar to darryldarryl's.

It weighs 1.3g. Some elements are fully and sharply struck, other elements are missing.

Next is a 1983, also 1.3 grams.

While the photo doesn't show it and the coin had some circulation, the details are sharp with none of the tell tale acid symptoms

Last one is a 1975 at 2.6g. It is thinner and smaller than it should be. I am surprised it isn't lighter than 2.6g.

None of these match foreign coins struck at the Canadian mint.

I am convinced that the coin in question is the result of acid attack (done slowly and mostly on one side of the coin). I have a good number of similar coins

(due to lack of equipment and technical skills, pictures are not currently available)

Smallcentguy:
The first coin you posted also looks to have been struck on a split planchet. It's a nice example of the error and in decent condition. The other two don't look like errors, though, from what I can see.

Errorone,

I have my doubts about the 1975. It might be a metalwork project.

But I like the 1983. I hope these photos are better. I like that the detail in some areas is very crisp, like the stem of the leaf and the word Regina. No signs of acid damage there at all. Other parts, like the beads, are totally missing. Generally the centre is pretty crisp while the edges are not well formed. Also, there are traces of lustre here and there....at the edges of the leaves and near the rims. I don't think that lustre is consistent with acid.

middross...I have been collecting some data on coin weights and according to what I can see is an average 1980 circulated Canadian penny weighs about 2.756 grams.

Here is one more try on the photo. The lustre is better than it apppears. You can get a sense of some at the top rim.
