IndianGoldEagle,
Don't you think the cheek rubs would hold this coin back a little? Other than this, I agree it is a great looking coin.

I don't think these are severe enough to knock the coin down to a 64. But putting out this kind of money on a guess would steer me towards buying an already slabbed PCGS or NGC slabbed coin.

The surfaces and devices do look pretty clean. I would think a 65 is quite possible. This is a coin to see in hand to see if it's really worth of a 65 or higher. Tough to bid without much better pix and/or not seeing it in person.

Most important words spoken in this thread. Even with the relatively-nice images, it's a very tough call whether or not this one gets 65 from PCGS. The fields are a bit skritchy, and it's unknown how they'd view the small-but-attention-grabbing marks on the shield verticals. 66? Nope. 65? Maybe. That would net you handsome profit potential, but it would need to be in a PCGS slab, and a 64 would wreck your investment. I really can't see myself risking Six Large on this coin.

That's probably why its on the BAY! Though you can find nice pieces and amazing finds, everything is always better in hand and in a big 3 holder

after reading responses from what I know to be reliable sources of information on this forum, I would pass on this coin as an MS66 and just keep looking. There are tons of auctions out there and you can find the right investment for your money with time and patience. just my thoughts...good luck

Thanks for the great advice and the opinions guys, I really appreciate all of your help. It seems like there isn't a solid consensus on what this would grade, other than it isn't a 66. It could be 65, or it isn't. It's an awful risk to take, I agree.
I've decided that since I've made deals with this seller before as someone I feel I can trust (and he offers a 14-day full money back return policy), I'm going to go ahead and buy the piece. But I have a plan. I'm going to request that he sends it into PCGS for me once I've made my payments on it, and ask him if it's still returnable if PCGS-graded. If he won't agree to that, I'll still buy it, and see how I like it in-hand (and upload higher quality pics for y'all to see) and get your opinions again. If I'm not satisfied with how it looks in person (and neither are you) then I'll simply return it to the guy within the 2-week grace period. I can't lose.
And if there's anyone else out there who would still like to give an opinion/grade, please go ahead! I'm looking for as many opinions and pieces of advice as I can! Thanks!!

Fabulous coin, but not MS66. That is a very hard grade to achieve with such a large gold coin where the metal is very soft. On the first obverse image, I can see quite a few tiny scuff marks. Whatever the nominated grade, it would certainly look nice in any collection. I suspect that there is a temptation for some TPG's to overgrade slightly, especially at the higher grade levels. There has been some discussion here in the CCF about this issue in the past.

That sounds like a very good plan to me. Please still keep us posted on the outcome. If you happen to get it in hand, ! Happy buying!

Thanks for your opinion sel_69l, so do you think it would grade ms65 or 64 then, in your opinion?
CoinsKelly, I'll have finished my payments in April and I will be back in the states in July (I am going to request he have it sent to me in early July) so as soon as I am able to see it in person I will post pics, you have my word :)

FYI, here's a PCGS MS-65 example of this date that sold on Heritage for $4512 last May (including buyer's fee). The ICG coin does not look quite as "clean" as this piece although it does have great luster. The PCGS coin has less rub on the cheek which I think is an important advantage. Based on the available images I don't think the ICG piece would make PCGS MS-66 and might not be strong at MS-65.

I still need one of these for my 7070. After comparing the ICG & PCGS I will say MS63+ . Very nice piece.

No doubt the ICG coin is a nice one. It may well cross at MS-65 to PCGS but in that case you will have paid too much based on Heritage history for that coin/grade/TPG combination. If it were to cross at PCGS MS-66 you will come out way ahead. Once you have it in hand you will be able to decide whether it satisfies; if not, you can use the return privilege.
If you keep it you will likely never be sorry. It is a beautiful piece to have in your collection.

I think it is 65 too. The large gold coins get a break in grading, due to their tendancy to acquire marks very easily being such a soft and heavy coin. I agree 66 is unlikely, and $5800 is too much to risk.
