Yes, true none of the US nickels were the 99% like Canadian. I'm surprised the Canadian govt isn't taking them out of circulation like the pennies.

They are. The Canadian government has been quietly withdrawing the pure nickel pre 1982 coins for some time now, and not just the five cent pieces.

I bet the US government is taking the copper pennies out too. Out of 600 pennies only 150 were copper.

I don't believe you'll find any after 1940 worth saving, but here are some to look for: 1949d D/S 1943p doubled eye 1945 DDR1943-P 3 over 2 any War NickelsBut also, I really save any nickels 1959 or older. I also save really nice nickels (when coin roll hunting) that are from 190 or earlier. Yeah I've also pulled 39-S before. Had to buy me a 39-D though, they're tough.

Oh a 2009-P is almost impossible out this way. I've never found one but my wife bought me a nice one for Valentines Day. (the 39-D too)

Chiming in again to say I save all 1960 and earlier nickels. If nothing else, they make nice trading chips.

Wjeeda, the 1994 and 1997 I saved one of each that stood out really nice looking. How do I identify high relief or not?

sharper relief coins have more detail, and the details on the coin are lifted up. I don't believe someone would crack them from a set, but you can and google " Jefferson nickels commemorative set 1994 1997"...it'll get you a few results. |

I save 1963 and under. But all nickels I roll up and save. The 1963 and under are what I count as my collection, the ones after I'm just saving because they might be worth something later.

I basically do the same. Nickels are worth keeping. They are the last real $$ except for pre 1982 pennies and of course silver coins. Some including me feel keeping nickels can't hurt. I remember being very keeping all those silver coins in our change!

I will take a photo of the 1997. It has sharper details then another 1997 if the relief can be determined by looking at a photo.
I give all USA coins I get to a customer who uses them while visiting the US.
Recently ended up with some rolls from what appeared to be hoarded coins.
Lots of nickel Canadian and a range of USA like a family member rolled everything.
