Are there any shipping costs or taxes involved?

No, It's a local person. Maybe 10-15 ride. Basically a meet & greet.

If I make the deal. I will be trading Rosie dimes, Wash quarters, & Ben halves. Nothing older than 1932.

I would figure out which would give me the most money, if you were going to sell.

You would have to decide on where you would sell them.
If it was a local coin shop, find out what they would pay for
the silver rounds and what for the 90%

Then I would take which ever is highest.

I don't know the details of the deal but I say keep what you have. Mostly because you already know what you have. after such a deal, you may or may not know what your have.
Are they real? Is there shipping charges? Insurance charges? Lost in mail situations? If I were you I'd stick with what I know, not what may or may not be.

I vote to to split! I would keep the halves split out some quarters and dimes for some rounds. Nothing wrong with some diversification. I think value wise they will both stay in the near spot bAllpark and down the road perhaps they will help you with another deal :)

I just prefer the coins since I like the historical aspect. I find bullion a little boring...

Ok, I contacted my LCS & w/ spot at $21.91, they are paying $14.60 for 90% {melt is $15.65 per $1.00} & paying $.50 below spot for .999. Any thoughts?

I would check with another store. The store I work with pays melt for 90% and the next buyer covers the premium. At the listed prices you would be better off with the bullion (today). I can't say down the road though. There was a time when 90% sold at a premium to melt and generics didn't. If you are making the trade I assume it is not to just sell it right away.

Based on those numbers the .999 would be best.

Those numbers are little different than my LCS.

Unless the .999 are ASE's.

If I remember right $1.35 of 90%, is what it takes to get 1oz of silver.

I would be reluctant because of the GENERIC rounds. Like some others, I might consider the deal for ASE's, however, I do like the silver classics.
Rest in Peace

I may have misunderstood, so let me take a second shot.
In terms of metal melt value....
ASW is Actual Silver Weight. Not coin weight.
Nine ounces of 100% bullion has the same amount of silver as 10 ounces of 90% silver coin.
Coins offer the 10% bonus in copper.
Coins offer the better deal for melt value. Authenticity is seldom questioned, and assaying in not necessary.
However, If your dealer is offering 1986 ASL's in MS70 it would change the scenario. Novelty bars won't.
I admire that you ask "What should I do?" in preference to "Did I make a good deal?
Thanks for the opportunity to express my opinion.
Best luck whatever you choose.

So, I did contact another local LCS & was told pretty much the same numbers. I will contact APMEX today.

I understand that, but, you don't see that 10% copper when you decide to sell.

The LCS's are offering more under spot/melt for .999 than they are for 90%. It sounds like a no brainer.

I did some math, Here is what I came up with as far as figures at today's spot,

I used Ben. Halves to simplify it.

  • Bens $42 face = 30.3825 toz = $647.75

    Copper ratio = 2.53 toz = $ 8.28

    LSC buy for 90% $42 face = 30.3825 toz = $603.65

    LSC buy for .999 -$.50 of melt = 30.3825 toz = $631.84

    APMEX buy for 90% $42 face = $660.66

    APMEX buy for .999 30.3825 toz = $652.01

But, w/ APMEX I need to calculate shipping & insurance.

Let me know your thoughts. Thank You.
