This makes my head hurt.
It's wrong to import a Cuban coin or stamp because it may benefit some Cuban, but it's okay to import the Cubans? My observation should not construed as being critical of a large portion of Miami's population, but rather critical of a large portion of Washington D.C.'s population.

Re: So much for the "land of the free"

ebay is a US based corporation. Note sure what "land of the free" has to do with anything. This is not a question of US law but more ebay's policies and business practices.

So if it's against the law to sell Cuban coins, how did they get to America in the first place?

Is the Cuban Missile Crisis over now? Can I come out of my bunker?

Embargos are silly, but the way you put it, that the coins are actually American, makes the authorities look stupid. The silver is Mexican, the minting is American, the usage was in Cuba, but really it's all taken out of the same earth. Imaginary borders really irk me, especially when they are racist in nature. We are all from the same planet, we share the same blood, and we fight over nonsense like this. Can we get ourselves together finally, or will that just obliterate history?

"umm... actually it is a question of US law. last I checked ebay wasn't responsible for the embargo."

What are you talking about?

The whole issue here is ebay's misunderstanding and subsequent misguided enforcement of a US law.

Therefore your blame should lie with ebay. No?

ebay has a lot of crazy rules and regulations. I do not agree will all of them, which is why I limit what I sell on ebay.

Besides coins, I also collect silver Cross pens. One day I was leaving feedback with a seller with this; "The pen is as described, fast shipping too.". My feedback was rejected due to it being obscene. I had to change the feedback to "The pennnnnnn issss as described".

I think ebay has gone overboard with their political correctness policies.

Its probably not even a misunderstanding rather a decision they made to limit their liability. If they allow it theres potentially a lot of hassle proving theyre pre-embargo ect and they probably decided it just wasnt worth the hassle/risk so they banned them all.

Generally, proving that an item is pre-embargo would be a hassle but a DATED COIN should be as no-brainer as it gets

This is the crux of the situation. It's not that a pre-Castro coin predates the embargo, it's that there is no real way to prove that coin hasn't benefited a Cuban concern post-embargo. Ludicrous to you and me, but ebay Legal cares not at all about "ludicrous."

While Id love to be able to go on there and buy some, I cant blame them for just taking this approach with how people try and get around the filters. Theyd need a dedicated team just to police those listings. Any opening they leave is assured to get abused.

This fits their mo too. They do the same thing with gun magazines. Instead of saying certain ones cannot be sold to people with address in xyz states, if its illegal in a couple states they just ban the sale of them completely.

my understanding was that unless you could prove the item was imported before the embargo that it was a no-go (regardless of when it was made), after some research I stand corrected. ebay's blanket ban is just a lazy way to protect itself.

here's a related article to the whole subject:
http://www.coinworld.com/articles/b...s-collectors

there are a few cuban coins and notes up right now using creative spelling, and thousands from iran, syria, etc
