Old photos have always been useful to me. Take notice of where old swings, hitching posts, and outhouses, etc. used to be! Hitching post, wagon parking areas are where folk were climbing on/off horses and wagons..

Here in Australia down in a state called Victoria as long as you have a Miners Right you can detect in that States State Forest's,
Most of the gold on "Aussie Gold Finds" is from Victorian State Forest's which covers most gold fields down there,
so it doesn't matter where you are there are plenty of possibility's

Been helping a friend research some likely old toll booth locations in the mid-west on long forgotten roads. People tend to drop change all the time at them, these are really old roads mostly dirt, hopefully he will have some success if he can find the right area. He seems to be quite lucky in his detecting, he found a 1921-D Mercury dime in VF/EF and a Carson City Seated dime last year along with several handfuls of silver coins. Nice !  Wish I could find someone in my area to hunt with, with more experience than me. I'm pretty sure its highly illegal to do State/National parks, by the way... Edited by BernieZ

There used to be a show I think on the Travel Channel that showed places where you could legally hunt. Some were state parks I think but it was a few years ago. I did write them down but for the life of me don't know where the paper is!

Schools seem to be best for me. Look up records of schools in your area espicially ones that show up on 1950s maps. For some reason, old schools in the slums have been best. 3 silver rings, 1 gold, 10 silver coins, and $50+ in clad! Good luck and hope this helps

I went and metal detected my backyard for the first time yesterday. I found a hammer, a lawn mower blade, a chain, and a bunch of nails.
Even though I got nothing good, it was still fun every time that buzzing noise went off.
Haha...

My top spots have been around sports field areas and concessions stands that are by grass and especially if these areas are on hill sides overlooking the fields.

Paul, metal detecting in a National Park is a federal crime. Not a good idea.
