Type Set Based On The Lincoln Cent

An iteresting new trist on a coin collection. There would naturally be a problem in displaying. How could you place them in the order you have mentioned? How could you explain what your attempting so others would understand?
For example I doubt there are any Albums that could fit such a variety. Taping them to a board, plastic sheet, etc. would damage the coins. Can't glue them to anything for the same reason. Any display case, such as what dealers use at coin shows wouldn't work due to all the size variations up to the half or full sized dollars. If you go to a coin show or coin store, they do have those casses made for 1-1/2 flips and some for 2x2 flips. Placing all your coins in flips and in those casses would be one type of presentation but again, not for all coins due to sizes.
And one little item. Have you thought of the cost for all this yet?
Still if done may well be something really unusual and interesting.

1) 1944 Shell Case copper Lincoln
2) 1969 Redesigned ( = recut ) obverse Lincoln.
3) 1982 First Zinc Lincoln.
4) 1966 Jefferson - addition of F. S. [Felix Schlag's initials]

Wow, great responses so far and thanks for the encouragement! The best thing I can think of to display is this, and you can tell me if it would work or not. Buy a Dansco album, find or create my own pages with the correct holes. I could easily get acid free archival card stock and cut my own holes. Shoot, I could probably even get a nice faux vinyl or some kind of finished looking material and make my own pages. I'd have to do some research and figure out what types of glue and materials will be good for coins to not tone them...

I had originally thought I would put the Lincoln on the far left and then space it further than the rest of that years issues... or I could put the cent in the center and the others on either side but I run into a problem; I wouldn't be able to fit a single year across one row due to the size of the coins (I would probably have to limit each page to one or two years and make them into groups that somehow center on the cent).

I thought about some type of custom shield type holder that I make myself but that thing would be the size of a plate glass window!

I thought about a super truncated version of the set where the cent would be in the middle and then a large circle of just the different coins around it in two different flavors, the wheat and the memorial so:

- 1909 Wheat, Barber dime, Mercury dime, Roosevelt dime, V Nickle, Buffalo nickle, Jefferson nickle, Barber quarter, Standing Liberty quarter, Washington quarter, Walking Liberty half, Franklin half, Peace dollar, Morgan dollar and then...
- 1959 Memorial, Roosevelt dime, Jefferson nickle, Washington quarter, State Quarter, Territory Quarter, State Park Quarter, Kennedy half, Ike dollar, Susan B Dollar, Sac Dollar, Pres Dollar

I would still limit the dates to the first years of issues and for issues that crossed the 59 line I could do the different alloy (ex. the 1909 Wheat with Washington quarter would be the 1932 but the 1959 Memorial could be the 1965 from the change in mint mark location and the end of silver to clad) Something like that.

I don't know... the more I think about the changes in coinage over the last 100 years, the bigger this potential type set becomes in my mind! I really want to do it though! Keep the ideas coming though, I'm handy enough that I could probably fashion something with minimal machinery needed too so if it's a display idea, have at it!

I was working on appraising a collection recently and I found a slab that was specifically designed to hold type sets. Not sure where it was from, but that might be a good place to start for some of your sets. The ones I had were designed to hold the 1 cent through 50 cent denominations, but I'm sure you can find some that hold the large and small size dollars as well.

Another option is 2x2's. They're stupid cheap to buy, and you can buy "pages" to hold and display them. The most common appear to be 20-slot sheets, but you could probably find larger sheets if you do some digging.

If you oriented the years vertically, and made your own pages it might work. This way each lincoln would be at the top and the other coinage varieties below it...

You can get a Dansco year set album with pages that go from cent to half.

Okay, here are the first 8 pages! This has been really fun putting this project together. I've spent about two hours doing this layout and about three hours at local hobby stores researching materials. I've settled on acid free chip board, acid free spray adhesive, and a cool medium gray acid free textured card stock for the finish front and back of each page. I'm also in the process of figuring out how to get the holes done mechanically and I'm close. I've almost got this thing down to about five bucks a page plus time (maybe I'll start my own custom album company!)

I still haven't figured out what to call the set so if anyone has any ideas that would be cool, what I have there now is more of a place holder. I also can't decide if I should print the type of coin below each hole (barber dime, Walking Liberty half, etc...) thoughts?

I stopped at 2000 because I'm still trying to figure out what to do with 2004, 2005, and 2006 with the nickles and State Quarters. I don't really want to do an entire page per year and I still have 2009 and 2010 to deal with too. One lady's thought was to just ditch the Dansco blank album all together and get my own larger three ring and make the pages bigger...
