Lackluster sales will continue I have a feeling. To me, the design falls short artistically.

Meadowview... I think it is worse than falls short. They had a great Obverse design they could have easily produced and drawn buyers in - and this selection almost seems to push people away. Especially after the very poor selling GSA - which went down the same path - ignore very compelling images and choose a very bland design.

I actually think the final selection veered away from the intent - which was to honor the Law celebrating the end of oppression - and went backwards to acknowledging the oppression itself and as such has crippled the sales. Instead of celebrating the victory - they are reliving the battle - and not many people apparently are thrilled with that choice.

Hopefully the mint will get the message about the designs their picking this time. They doubled up back to back and basically the exact same design and it hasnt done well either time.

I dont like that they keep using a single design aspect across all types of the coins either with the exception of the baseball one. Being curved the glove was a perfect choice and not much else would have looked good.

I still think this one would have sold a lot better if they picked the liberty bell design, that one looked like it would have looked fantastic.

Just received this Commemorative from the Mint today and I like it. I'm not in love, but I am genuinely happy with it.

I like the obverse; to me it well represents working class Americans asserting their rights and makes me proud of my country. The reverse intrigues me as I've been drawn to more obtuse art as I age.

It's a great compliment to my 2007 Little Lock Dollar!

The packaging was spectacular and much preferred to the usual unc packaging.

Congrats BernieZ! I hope you enjoy your first commem!

Not that anyone asked...

The latest sales figures for the CRD continue to paint a dismal sales picture.

For the month of May, just 2,479 Proof coins were sold along with 824 of the Uncirculated version.

If this monthly pace is continued for the remaining seven sales months of 2014, total sales of the Proof coins will be less than 70K and sales of the Uncs will be around 27K.

Both figures are lower than last year's Girl Scouts dollar.

Sales continue to limp along for this coin, with just 660 of the Proof coins and 209 of the Uncirculated coins sold in October (per the latest Mint report).

The most recent sales totals for the coin are: 57,173 Proof and 23,303 Uncirculated.

With just two months of sales to go, the Civil Rights dollar is lagging far behind last year's Girl Scouts coin (86,353 Proof, 31,714 Uncirculated). It appears very likely that the coin will not generate enough sales to be eligible to receive the surcharges collected by the Mint. (Unless an "angel" comes along and makes a large bulk purchase before the end of the year.)

Personally, I just don't understand how it is they Mint passed on the opportunity to do an MLK Commem. If slow sales are a concern (and they should be), they can be squarely blamed on not doing a more inspiring coin.

I don't care how many surface textures they used! If the design isn't inspiring, it ain't gonna sell. I do like this dollar and especially in proof, and I like the Liberty Bell design too. But frankly, skipping MLK makes no sense to me.

It is not the US Mint that decides which commemorative coins are to be struck - they are directed by the US Congress. It is Congress that approves bills that create commemorative coins for individual private sponsors - in this case, the United Negro College Fund.

In terms of the designs used on the coins, while the final designs are selected by the Secretary of the Treasury. He/she generally does so only after close consultation with the coin's sponsor over their design preferences. The designs you see on this coin were what the UNCF wanted.

Bottom line, it is not the US Mint's fault that the sales for this coin have lagged - they didn't sponsor it nor did they decide on its design. They struck the coin they were told to and have been diligently marketing the coin since its release. The fault for slow sales lies elsewhere.

I was in the same boat as the majority of you and didn't like it until I received them from the mint. Its one of those coins that to me looks way way better in hand then in a picture.

with commems comments. Look at the success with the 2014 Baseball HOF series.

I do like collecting UNC commemoratives over their Proof siblings and the lower the mintage the better. I was going to wait to see if I can get it cheaper on ebay, but I think I'll pick one up with my next Mint order.

I purchased an uncirculated dollar which arrived within 3 days of placing my order.

Unless something changes, it looks like the UNCF won't be receiving surcharges.

Mint has the uncirculated sold out. I think only a few of the mid 90's Olympic dollars and the 1996 Community Service Dollar have a lower mintage but we'll have to see what the final number is.
