PCGS may drop a grade for scratch. If you check lot 3680 heritage auction it was a 16/16 buffalo I sent for grading clearly a vf 20 came back VG 10 scratches on face and big mold spot on reverse so they dropped 2 grades in my opinion. I sold it on ebay may 20th 2012 for $7,000. And the buyer got the same at heritage on sept 6th. Great coin to own even for a month. Point being a 21 is a better coin and they are not as fast to give detail grade.

Man, this is a great great quarter Johnny! Here's what I see. I'm all about the EF40/45 but I also see what looks like some signs of cleaning. Particularly the field under 'IB' in Liberty on the obverse and 'RTY' near that scratch that concerns you. If you ask me, someone checked a little to hard to see if it was a scratch or could be rubbed out? I also see some horizontal abrasions on the reverse in the field to the left of the left wing. Could be the pic, what do they look like in hand? Then again, those marks could be just abrasions from whatever caused the rim ding on the left? All that together could net it a details grade?

Still, dude, I admire this coin! I would gladly pay you $12.65 for it if you decide not to keep it... Okay, $13 and shipping. :)

You guys must have better eyes than me. I see no signs of cleaning, even under a 30x loupe. The only thing I see in the areas you mention rking is subdued mint luster. Maybe its my photography or lighting that is throwing it off. Sure, there are a few scattered circulation hairlines, like most circ slqs have...but the color and surface quality looks completely original to me. I have handled quite a few cleaned slqs, including a cleaned 1921. I actually have several cleaned slqs in my collection that need to be upgraded..:-)

Thanks for the opinions. Personally, I think it would have a shot at AU if they did not deduct for the scratch. Taking the scratch into account, I'd guess market grade is XF-40 to 45.

I don't think this coin would make AU with or without the scratch. It is a beauty and grades a 40 to my eyes.

XF40. I don't think they would ding it for that scratch. Any larger would warrant a details grade IMO.

Super quarter and it really shows your devotion to the series.
I'm going to agree with xf40 also.

What has got me scratching my head is the rim beading at 9 to 1 oclock.
With those toes and date definition the beading must be a strike issue wouldn't you say?

Again I love the coin and I wish I had the cash when you had the other 1921 for sale here
since I've recently bought a Dansco for this set.

Yeah, I think that is just an area of strike weakness or Die Deterioration. Thanks for your kind words everyone.
I am curious how would you grade the following 4 1921 examples.

Well, nobody offered opinions on these 4. These were the last 4 XF-40 examples that sold most recently on Heritage....and I feel mine is substantially stronger than all of them. Look at the tail feathers of the eagle, the inner shield detail, the roundness of the right leg etc... Anyways, I am biased I suppose, but in comparison I still think AU is likely, at least XF-48 if that were a grade....:-)

I'm "new" at these and could easily be convinced that yours is better than the xf40 that I thought
