Very fascinating item! I enjoying collecting items related to classic coins almost as much as the coins themselves. Wish I could offer up some information for you.

Very cool piece! I wonder who made it. Another thought would be that maybe it is some kind of prop for movies or something like that.

Accurately measuring the internal dimensions might be helpful. If this box dates back to the Capped Bust half dollar era, The change in coin diameters in that series may be revealing. The diameter changed from 32.5 mm to 30.0 mm in 1836. The Kennedy halves (30.6 mm) placed in the box in your first image seem to be too loose a fit.

The interior of the box is 6 1/4" by 6 1/4".

(The lid is warped, and will no longer slide into place).

Can anyone suggest a fair asking price?

Bill - its probably made for a single owner - we all have seen old mint bags being sold - not boxes. UNIQUE. But made by a farmer ... a rich farmer <BG>.

My guess is that these were used to send coins from bank to bank.

(Perhaps at the turn of the last century)?

Only one thing to do to make it as authentic as possible....Get 500 barber or Seated liberty halfs and fill that lovely box!
