I just checked and unfortunately(maybe fortunately?) the alignment is correct. I have never found any coin with alignment that wasn't within mint tolerance.

Thanks. I was trying to figure out why the Feeder Finger Damage was in the wrong direction.

So ? What DOES cause 'Feed Finger' damage?

Incorrect psi adjustment on the feeder?

Stacked coins trying to go through at the same time?

Plating issues?

Coop, you posed a question of the day. Please, whats the answer?

Good someone does want to know.

The cause of Feeder Finger Damage is a strike on of the fingers. Here are a couple images:

When the fingers are struck they get bent and the scraping of the dies begin until the problems is fixed.

I bet a feed finger like those in the collecting community would be worth... a pretty penny!

I got these images off ebay. I wanted to show what caused the problem. The machine probably strikes the finger and they hear it and stop the machine. So probably a few probably gets through before the fix the issue.

So the Feeder pushes and holds the coin between the dies? How would that cause scrapes on the planchet. I thought I had a good grasp on the minting process but maybe I'm missing something. I guess I'm asking what part of the feeder damages the planchet?

The feeder inserts and rejects the planchet/coin. When the feeder finger gets damaged, then it scratches the field of the die. Thus the die scrapes are on the fields and run behind the devices as they are sunk into the die. So a polishing of the fields would remove the die scrapes.

Great information!

Makes me want to take a machine apart to see what makes it all happen.

I have been lucky enough to go to the Philly and Denver Mint but your stuck so far away behind glass that you cant tell much of anything.

This is the setup for the proof dies. I was thinking also it was a two step process, but the Proofs maybe different. Good question.

I didn't want to hijack the thread, but I had some information that I hadn't shared yet on the subject. Still have a lot more also. I like to use it at the right time.
