SHALLOW N!! WOOHOO!! This purchase was a homerun then, even if it was slightly overgraded....well maybe not a homerun, but the shallows are worth a bit more in general aren't they?

AU55 Shallow N looks like that clashing has just about made this die terminal, very cool.

Yibbercats and DVcollector nailed it. NGC GRADE AU-58 BN I immediately cracked it out of the slab for my album. I probably should have snapped some photos beforehand, but fortunately we have cert verification photos right here. http://www.ngccoin.com/certlookup/i...=2629607-006
I understand the lower grades though, since I did not capture the luster well and there is some strike weakness. I paid $450 on ebay http://www.ebay.com/itm/31098766087....m1497.l2649

The last 3 AU58 1870s with BOLD N sold for:

$558
http://coins.ha.com/itm/indian-cent.../1187-7224.s

$705
http://coins.ha.com/itm/indian-cent.../1184-7195.s

587.50
http://coins.ha.com/itm/indian-cent.../1184-1158.s

And these were all BOLD Ns. I am having a hard time finding an AU58 sale for a shallow N. But I am pretty sure this was a great score....yeah?

It's a really nice example! The dies for this year were plagued with problems--breaks are common.
Also, I wasn't sure if this coin has a DDR--there are a number of DDRs for this year. What caught my attention was the thick top serif of the N in ONE.

Very nice pickup for the price! The "shallow N" variety is slightly scarcer than the "bold N" for 1870. There is also a doubled die reverse for the date 1870 where there is a combination of the bold and shallow types.

The date 1872 has a shallow N variety which is much scarcer than the 1870 shallow N.

The date 1871 is extremely rare with the shallow N reverse. An MS 64 RB just went for sale for $7500!!

My first thought was AU-58. I guess I was too late. Congrats on getting a high-grade rare variety! For that price on top of that!

Thanks Redrider on the information of the shallow N vs. BOLD N. So at this grade, do you see any price increase based off of the fact that it is a shallow N? The RedBook gives marginal increases in the range of $50 or so in the AU range. Do you think it is fair to say that this coin is valued at $50 more than an equally graded 1870 Bold N?

For 1870, a $50 bump for the Shallow N seems reasonable in this grade. For an 1871 in this grade, you would expect to pay 4X-7X the normal price. Keep your eyes open for them, they are out there.
