I never thought Cascade would practice thread necromancy! But even so, a worthy bump.

Oops ... Messed up ...I missed giving updates. The book was in the tub for a long time. Now it has been sitting out in a smoke free invironment. When I look through it now I barely notice any smell.

Nice update. Musty smells are not too difficult to get rid of, but smoke is a real pain. I like the info here and sounds like the end result was a positive.

Thanks for the update. I have found an old ionizer machine (new actually) from my father's stuff that my mom had stored, she gave it to me. I need to get some new ceramic plates to make it work again, can't wait to try it out on books now.

Having spent a large part of my youth in public libraries, I find "old book smell" endearing. Not sure if whatever causes the smell is damaging to the books, but I suspect so.

Quote: Having spent a large part of my youth in public libraries, I find "old book smell" endearing. Not sure if whatever causes the smell is damaging to the books, but I suspect so. I also like this smell-perhaps for the same reason. Although there are variations to this smell which I like more than others. It is nostalgic for me. However, I am glad that I found this thread because I have a used Whitman album I purchased because I prefer the older ones/vintage ones if I find them. But the smell in this thing goes beyond "old book" to almost moldy. I started filling it and then I took the coins out because I just couldn't enjoy it. I am going to use some of these tips and see if I can save it.

Quote: I find "old book smell" endearing. So do I. Quote: Not sure if whatever causes the smell is damaging to the books, but I suspect so. A blend of various volatile organic compounds being released over time from the book materials (paper, glue, ink, etc). They are probably doing more harm to you than the books. With that being said, I just love how my Dansco albums smell. Thinking about it is what I do whenever someone tells me to go to my happy place.
