Looks like you have a $5-10 coin there. If you clean it, it's worthless.

Thanks, I have it sitting in goof off, and will leave it in there for a few hours. I tried for a minute and couldn't tell any difference. My goal is to have at least one flying eagle next to some of my indian head coins. On Monday, I'll see if the coin shop has a better one. Thanks for the tips. I did notice for flying eagles, that cleaned ones on ebay were doing pretty well. Again, I don't plan on selling it, especially getting it for four bucks.

Goof Off is just as bad. PLEASE quit destroying coins for the next generation. If you can't keep your hands off them, collect something else.

Wheatchaser, Thanks for the advice, I washed the coin off and then rubbed it with olive oil and it looks........ better than before. I can see the flying eagle much better and can actually read the date without needing a magnifying glass. I appreciate the suggestion as my hope was in the album, one could tell it was a Flying Eagle penny and not just an undetermined copper blob. I could clean it more, but given I can read the date, I think it is where I would like.

Why not just use some H2SO4 and dissolve that thing all together. Then leave the bluish solution left in a clean glass dish to evaporate. The bright blue crystals left would make a great conversation item. Just think you could show them to people and tell them how you ruined a great coin.

I was thinking about sharing my other idea to melt down some Morgan silver dollars to make a silver paper weight. Never mind.

Based on the FE, they are giving you good prices because they're selling you garbage.

This coin was definitely garbage, but for $4, it was nice to add to my collection next to my indian head, large cent, and half pennies.
If you go to coin shows, you would likely know the coin shop owner. He has been doing coins for about 40 years. I have a bunch of Morgans and for fun, asked him how they would grade and sent 10 of them in to NGC. He was spot on as most were MS 63 (one posted in the guess the grade section). He also sold me a bunch of Franklins (also posted in the guess the grade section). He sold them at $6.60 each and most in the grading area agree they are either AU or MS.
As mentioned over there, another shop said they would give me $17 for it and they were only VF. I wanted to see who was right, as VF and MS are a big difference. That is what I have enjoyed about this board. I have posted some coin images, and you have been spot on regarding the grade.

Thanks for asking. He mainly traded 12 Dansco Albums (which he threw in free) and only charged the coins around melt. This included canada dollars, Franklin halves ($6.60 each) album, Liberty head halves (the only one he charged more than spot) album, liberty quarters album, Standing quarters album, Barber dimes album, merc dimes album, Walking Liberty halves album. My favorite almost complete album was the Kennedy half (including proof) album). Obviously they didn't charge much for this as it has a lot of non-silver in addition to all of the proofs form 1964 - 2004. I also picked up (not at spot) Half Cents, Half Dimes, the old V and 5 nickles, large cents, Indian cents... The only crap coin I got was the FE just because he didn't have any of these. I had purchased a lot of rounds and ASE in September, and they ran out. They were just going to replace them, but I had plenty of rounds and ASE, so I just traded for what I mentioned above. I think we both got a win/win. I got tired of just buying rounds and ASE as I am convinced they will never be worth that much (given they don't pay rent or dividends). I don't plan to make any money off coins either, but at least it makes a hobby. For income, I think rentals are a better bet given the passive income. I'll take a picture of the Kennedy book, as it is my favorite even it was cheap. Again, cheap because they needed my rounds and ASE (they ran out) and nobody wanted older coins.

Here is a picture of my favorite one (ironic that it's only part silver). Contains about 100 coins for I think $1.80 per coin. It had the proof for almost every year from 1964 - 2004. It's funny, he doesn't count or do anything like that. He just quickly flips through the book and throws out a price. I leave the ones I think are overpriced, and grab the ones I think are fair. Some say S Proof and other say S Sil Proof, and others say S 40% proof. I need to look this up and see what what they are. I just looked at the picture online, and it looks much better in person. Sorry I haven't figured out the picture taking thing yet. The lowest is a sample of my Standing Liberty quarters. I agree the quality is low, but the price was right! Based on the cost, I doubt there are any semi-key dates. I just think of it as junk silver in a nice album. Again, he just flips through and throws out a number. Mostly, he just needed rounds.

The OP's FE is something one typically sees as an end coin for an ebay offering of an unsearched roll of cents from an estate sale.

I would assume these albums are mostly from estates. I have no idea about the FE. The shop owner tends to buy anything like these albums and jewelry. The problem is, most going to the shop only want rounds (i.e., buffalo) or ASE. I don't even know if you can send jewelry in to melt, or if it is cost effective to do so. Everything else just sits on the shelves. He had to dust off these albums. I had been going for a month, and saw them in an obscure corner of the shop. I will not clean a coin again. I will not clean a coin again. I will not clean a coin again. I will not clean a coin again. I will not clean a coin again.
