Matt Good to her your making progress on your type sets. Sounds like your way ahead of me. I get side tracked pretty easy. As silver has been dropping I switched to Buying silver, ASE's and 90%. Plus there is a customer that might bring in a large collection of seated and Morgan dollars into the local shop. So I have been saving up for some big purchases there. And for the last three weeks I have been working on a inventory of my collection. 18,000 coins so far, and still have a little more to count. Will be nice to see pictures of your you sets. I will be sure to check out that post.

If you're happy with the price, get them. It could be some time before you see a group of them again.
I love them -- hard to store, but they're really nice looking.

I do like the looks of them, 70 percent of the coins I buy I plan on selling someday, pass down 30 percent. So when I buy things like this I hope I can get them at a price so that when I do sell them I can make a little. I made them a offer on the two sets I liked the best. and they took it. I will be checking ebay to see what these are selling for. I may pick up more of the sets this week. The two I picked are the 1991 with the silver proof Mt. Rushmore dollar and clad half dollar, the 1993 with the bill of rights silver dollar and silver half dollar. Here are a couple quick pictures I took.

My kids and I collect " special " proof sets. We have well over half of these. We have all the Premier Silver proof sets. We have all but the 2008 Legacy sets and the 2012 and 2013 Special Edition sets.
The Prestige and Legacy sets are the kids favorites. Entirely due to the Silver dollars and Half dollars. They love looking at the 1991 Buffalo half dollar , comparing their Nolan Ryan baseball card with their 1992 Nolan Ryan Commem. Silver dollar.
Are they an investment ? No, and I doubt they ever will . Is it a cool way to collect limited edition proof sets and Commemorative coins? My kids and I love them.
The key sets, and the only ones you will make money from, are the 1995, 1996 and 1997 sets. The 1996 set being the key.
Also the 1983 and 1984 sets command a bit more because they were the only sets in leather binders as opposed to the velvet binders

My kids and I love them Great way to get your kids into collecting .. I might try that when my grand kids are older. I understand about proof sets as investments. As a whole buying proof sets are a bad investment. In the after market there should be price points where there could be room to make some profit. I posted this thread to sort of feel out what other collectors thought about these sets, helps me come up with a good offer. For years I was breaking open all the proof and mint sets I bought, either for my dansco's or just to put into 2X2's and rolls. I have broken open Prestige sets in the past. Lately I have been keeping them in the OGP, even though they take up a lot of space.

I would go for them all for the pries you listed. I have a few of them, 83,84,86,90, and 93. I would love to have all of them just to be complete. I say go for it.

I'd own all of them if I could afford it.
I am here to tell you though, that the prices for them right now is CHEAP compared to what they used to be. They have peaked in value long long ago... and really are a bargain now.
I have owned a couple, don't have any at this time, but when they have all their mint packaging, and are not abused, they are a really nice item. If you have the means, and all the packaging is there, I'd go for it.
As a side note, I don't know why, but sometimes the coins in those sets get really cloudy. I would steer clear of those. Not for any other reason than they are ugly, and that defeats the purpose of buying a set that is purely for displaying the beauty of the coins.

Quote: As a side note, I don't know why, but sometimes the coins in those sets get really cloudy. Much like the brown box silver proof Eisenhower dollars. In the case of the Prestige set, and unlike the proof sets of the time, the lens is not secured or sealed at all. It can be opened very easily once removed from the outer plastic frame (also easy to remove). Storage location (non controlled environment) is going to be a factor.

Is there a way to remove that 'cloudieness' without running the proof?

No, there is not. You either learn to love it or you replace it.
