Looks ok to me....so what am I missing? Rim nick isn't bad enough for a details grade.

I'm more curious as to the surfaces. It looks rough and I can barely read some of the lettering. Is this a die issue?
I'm not buying or bidding on the coin, but would love to know if this is a "legit" AU-55 or overgraded.

I'm with paralyse - the letters in UNITED STATES OF AMERICA look awfully weak, and the first A in America is practically gone. Grease Fill, maybe? Would that justify a details grade?  |

I was saying that maybe the submitter knows someone on the inside of PCGS. This kind of thing happens. I Sorry for the confusion. I don't see any luster on the coin and it looks like it may have been cleaned. The coin may just look weird in the lighting? Edited by SilverStackerKid

I don't know but, it looks o.k. to me.
As far as the letters go probably greased filled.

Not a very good example for the grade for sure. There is even some verdigris on the reverse.

What's wrong with it? Let's see:
- Very fine porosity covering most of the coin.
- Rim nick on the obverse
- verdigris on the reverse
- very poor stike making the devices on the obverse and reverse
Could potentially be a cast counterfeit, but Idon't think it is and PCGS aparrently thought it wasn't as well.

I think this deserves a details grade.
That rim nick stands out to me.

What you're missing is virtually no wear on the breast and wingtips. Regardless of anything else, this coin circulated very little. With that as a given, you then have to start thinking why the rest of the coin looks the way it does, because circulation didn't do it.
To my mind, getting a pass on that rim ding might have been a bit much for PCGS.

This is helping me learn what to look for when looking at slabbed coins as far as if it's okay or if it's an overgrade/misgrade. Thank you for the information so far!
It can be hard to figure out at times what exactly will force a coin to go Details grade and what issues are "acceptable".

Thanks SsuperDdave - Just two days ago I started trying to be a bit educated on grading. This coin is a perfect example of what the PCGS guy said about understanding wear vs. poor strike.
PCGS has three good 45 minute long previews to their grading classes on youtube. Just google:

There are three vids I saw 101, 102, and 103. Even though they are only previews, it opened my eyes to things I did not know since I have never really studied grading beyond the antiquated system I grew up with in the 70s.
