Yeah, I'm at 63 with it. The Dragon Scale VAM is known with 2 (maybe 3) obverse dies; this is Die 1 (with the dot in the ear). It's believed the second obverse struck as VAM-36, although the first reported. And this wasn't the first use of the Dragon Scale reverse - that's VAM-113. There are something like 160 known 1878-S die pairings, yet only 140 named VAMs. Fun issue.

Yet I see a frosty detailed reverse showing a strong strike. Makes one wonder just how long these obverse dies lasted.

That's around what I thought aswell, about a 63ish. I bought it for the VAM more than anything. I've been looking for this one, and spaghetti wings for awhile and this is the first auction style I've seen. A couple buy it nows, but they ask 500obo for ms63 dragon scales. Have yet to see a spaghetti wings.

I'm on board with MS-63. That shallow gouge below Liberty's eye might be all that's holding it back from a possible 64.

MS details, cleaned. I believe I see hairlines in front of Liberty's neck and on her cheek.

Looks to be a bit of disturbance between the chin up to just above the tip of the nose. When you said you looked and saw the cleaning marks at the neck did you just look with the naked eye?
Try using a 2x or 3x glass under a strong light and SLOWLY rotate the coin so the light glances off the surface at many different angles. You might be surprised at what shows up.
Sometimes things show up different depending on what type of light source you use. I use incandescent, halogen, fluorescent, and plain ol sunlight. Some swipe (cleaning) show up like a plow furrow in a field sometimes.

I looked with a 20 loupe. There's about 10 hairlines in front of the neck. The rest of the coin is good that's why I said it must of had a spot there or something
