Interesting, would love to know what made them immigrate from a tax-free country haha. In all seriousness, Canada is much more beautiful in terms of scenery!
Likewise, I'm a huge fan of of the Umayyads of al-Andalus, been there last summer, and it is my favorite historical destination so far!
I will keep you updated with my pickups, is there a specific subforum where I can post recent pickups?

Well, I can tell you what happens if you want. I went to school at Cape Breton University. The island was rich as it produced steal and coal. All the miners unionized and wanted more money for their work and the price of what they mined started to go down. Sadly to say all the mines were closed and the island only source of income was the university. We have a great petroleum engineering program so people from all over the Middle East come to out school and pay big bucks to study. Once they graduate they go back to their home country. Greetings from Boston and welcome to the forum. You will not find a more knowledgeable forum of numismatic collectors than right here. I had been studying this my whole life and after having only been here about 5 months I have realized that I haven't even scratched the surface.
Love the ancient gold. Such a beautiful material to make currency from. It's a shame that so much of it has been melted down through history.

Hello and welcome.  Let me just correct some statements given above. I am not an "expert" in Islamic coins, nor would I consider myself an "expert" in any other coin field. There is an English saying: "Jack of all trades, master of none". That's me: I know (or try to learn) a little bit about everything numismatic, but I don't go deep enough into anything to become an expert at it. For example, the coin posted by the OP: I can't read it, without my books handy. Specifically, "Arabic coins and how to read them" by Richard Plant. All I can tell about the date, without my books, is that the date - and I'm not 100% certain it is the date - is a single word, but I couldn't tell you which word it is. "Eighty" sounds believable to me.  Quote:

Thank you all! Mayflower, I understand what you're saying, and I truly believe this is the best platform for numismatics.
It is certainly a shame many of the world's historical gold was melted down, I would consider us preserving history when collecting them :)
Sap, even if you're an expert, at least you know your sources and seem to be one of very few here that can read Arabic coins, it's good that you use a book, I also use books for Arab Sasanian dirhams (or drachmas like some call it), since I can't read Pahlavi, only Arabic. Your last point proves how inexperienced I am with Indian coins haha. The only Indian coins I've ever collected were the Mughal square Rupees from the Emperor Akbar. As for the rest, I'm clueless..
Can someone help me out, how do you quote a statement to reply to it? I've never been to any type of forums before.

Click on the reply to post link below instead of using the "quick reply" first, then under "format media" click the button for "insert quote" (second from the end) and paste the text you want to reply to between the code (cursor should be already set where you need it). Then put your response under the code. If that doesn't make sense, just try it a couple times and you'll catch on. And |
