Never even trust a slabbed coin until you have done your homework.

The pinkish/red undertone is suspicious. Look also at her eye. This is getting ridiculous.

Now they're tricking NGC? This is a bit worrying.

Truly bad news if the fakes are getting into genuine NCG holders ... holy cow. Worried about the future for any newer collector! David

Wow, Any idea how long these have been out there? I've got a 1798 at ANACS right now and it has the same general wear pattern as that coin. I honestly didn't look at it too closely before sending it. But the gentleman I traded with had the coin in his collection for at least 25 years.

I would assume these are fairly recent, or they would have been noticed by now. A lot of study goes into these coins and the differences are quite noticeable from a real one once you break it down.

That is an incredibly good copy, save of course for the 'Y' as EFLargeCents pointed out. I am frankly amazed anybody would consider spending that amount of money without first confirming the variety. I do this as a routine with any U.S coin I buy. I guess the fact the coin is encapsulated lulls people into a (as it proves, sometimes false) sense of security.

I'm glad NGC didn't pull the images when they pulled the certification.

Scary for sure. I too confirm all varieties as best I can. TPG's need to up their game, they are falling short! They need to start weighing all coins, confirm varieties, include XRF testing, and specific gravity. An authentic slab just meens that a "seasoned expert" has taken 10 seconds to look at a coin and declare grade and authenticity with little or no scientific evidence to verify that the coin is what they think it is. The people grading coins are good but too many mistakes are being made!

I'm sorry to see that NGC has now removed the images from the verification page.

I'm still of the belief that the Chinese & their fakes are going to destroy the dwindling hobby of collecting coins.
