I even like the contrast with the Dansco album pages. I like lowball sets too. A well circulated set tells a bit of a story.

Creative passion takes on many looks. Look at what folks are willing to pay on American Pickers. There is plenty of interest in old worn objects. Coins included. Lots of creative minds out there. I'm just waiting to see who is going to be next.

Awesome project!

I was actually just packing up my nickel hoard for a move, and I spotted at least one blackened War Nickel... 1943 I think (wife was applying pressure to ensure the packing process didn't take 3 weeks). I'll get a picture on this thread in a couple weeks when the move is done.

Also interstingly every single 1950-P nickel I had was blackened. What are the odds?

Will be looking forward to the updates!

Update ... My blackened Jefferson sort/select is now complete through 2015.

The collection has lots of holes ... but pleased to report that I do have 100 of the 163 coins needed for the set ... mindful that I've not including the 11 war silver nickels as eligible blackened candidates.

Sorting through these coins has brought me great collecting pleasure ... and I'm truly hopeful that your collecting endeavors bring you similar joy of the hobby.

Photos of the newest additions that make me happy ..

Updated Dansco images ...

Dansco P4 ... Updated with the year 2000 coins ...

My-

Dansco P5 ... my hand written additions to this used album.

That's it friends ... the end of my sort from 384,200 nickels searched.

I do have 12 outstanding blackened Jefferson duplicates ... setting them aside in case I can share them with any of you seeking to do the same.

Should this reply be the final word on the set ... I sincerely close the topic with this ...

Collect whatever makes you happy.

Best - David

To clarify ... I threw over 300 duplicates into the return to bank bag ...

The dozen remaining duplicates referenced above are the result of my inability to send to the bank at face value truly outstanding blackened Jefferson with cameo surfaces ...

I'm hopeful that some CCF member can benefit from my humble efforts ... and as such the 12 duplicates remain in my possession for possible trades and/or giveaways.

Keep in mind that after the new permanent obverse came in 2006, Dansco changed the 7113 to end at 2005 and moved 2006- nickels in the all new 7114 album. They did the same for the proof album, separating into 8113 and 8114.

I'm doing the same thing with my 7113, since it has empty slots through 2016-P. I'll get a new blank page soon.

I say bump the topic every few months with your progress. I suspect others will enjoy having a look at your black beauties/cameos going forward. We did after all.

Update #1 to my Blackened Jefferson search ...

Quote:
I've come across some black War Nickels.

I am now in agreement ... and have expanded the set to include all 174 circulation strike Jefferson minted 1938 - 2015.

During my CRH I have found 120 War Silver Jefferson ... sold most of them on ebay when silver was in the $30 range ... but went through the remainder of them and came across 3 that I consider 'eligible' for my Blackened set.

A few photos ....

1942-P Jefferson (War Silver) - Blackened

My-

1943-P Jefferson (War Silver) - Blackened

My-

The set also includes a 1945-P that looks very similar to the two examples shown above.

Now ... the War Silver are eligible and I hope to discover additional examples for the collection.

As I stated in my introduction to this endeavor ... the 'ideal' coins exhibit large amount of circulation cameo appearance ... dark toned fields with the legends and portraits appearing lighter in color due to circulation wear.

Here is an example of a recent find that makes me happy:

1952 Jefferson - Blackened with Circulation Cameo

My-

The cameo appearance is stronger on the reverse ... in hand a lovely addition to the set.

Last week I came across my 2nd low-mintage (below 10 million) 'key date' for the set.

1955 Jefferson - Blackened

My-

Lovely key date Jefferson indeed.

Set Status

My Dansco 7113 now contains 116 Blackened Jefferson. So I'm now exactly 2/3 of the way there.

Hopeful that you enjoy this update.

David

Nice David. Looks like you'll be able to complete the set at some point with the War Nickels turning up 'blackened'.
