I would say VF-30 as well. What I find interesting and I hadn't noticed until the other day with one of your posts, that all these early quarters, halves and silver dollars don't say what they are. I guess you just had to know by the size of the coin back then. LOL

At least VF-25, with nice original surfaces and no problems that I can see. If I were in the market and had the budget for a 1796 quarter I would likely have to lay out $30,000 or more to get a comparable piece. Beautiful and impressive coin, as are all the members of the billjones collection.

VF-30. Now that is my favorite coin you've posted yet. I have a "thing" for bust quarters. Beautiful!

For those of you graded this 1796 Quarter VF-25, congratulations! PCGS and I agree with you.
I bought this coin from the Worthy Coin Company bid wall which operated in Boston until the mid 1990s. This was a bid wall that unlike any other bid wall I have ever seen, before and since. There were some really great coins on it.
The bid wall which yielded this coin had TWO 1796 quarters on it. The other one graded EF, but it had been dipped. The selling price on that one was well beyond my ability to pay at that time.
It went to a dealer who came to unfortunate end. He caught the compulsive gambling bug. From what I heard he was into his bookie for something like $300 k. He disappeared never to be heard from again, at least among my circle of coin friends.

Wow, not only do you provide fascinating coin history, but you can color it with underworld intrigue!
