Thanks for the replies! I paid near AU58 money for the coin from Europe. Was advertised as aUnc so very happy with the coin. Will head off to PCGS next week and I`ll post the results when I get them.

AU - 55. Good example though.

At least AU-58. I'm not convinced it has wear, so it might make MS, but I'd have to see in hand. Beautiful!

WoW! Nice coin! Totally original. Is it raw?

The results are in, a very anti-climactic: Genuine - UNC Details (91 - Questionable Color). Needless to say, I'm pretty unimpressed! I would not have thought the colour on the coin was questionable, looks original enough to me.

Look around the edges of some letters/stars (absence of color) and also how thin the toning looks over Miss Liberty. It gives away a cleaning and re-toning. I am sure this coin was very expensive and you might consider returning it at this point if possible.

Many Capped Bust half dollars have been cleaned and re-toned. This one has UNC details and good eye appeal. I would have no problem adding this coin to my collection at the price you paid.

I'm not saying they are wrong, but I'm not seeing the cleaning. A beautiful coin!

Thanks guys, I totally disagree with PCGS on this one. Looking at other examples, the thin colour across liberty and the absence of colour as noted are present on examples as high as MS66 (the example on the PCGS page for this coin shows the exact same features). The coin has almost full lustre and I view the questionable colour as a cop-out on the part of PCGS. Given myself, the forum and the very well regarded auction house I purchased the piece from didn't see the tone as questionable its hard to agree with another third party assessment. I've had coins been given details grades in the passed for good reason, I just think they've got it very wrong for this piece.

I disagree with PCGS that the coin is Questionable color, and that it is MS. Send it to NGC as they are a better service.
