I think I'll encourage you to continue what you're doing. Over time you will figure out what floats your "boat". Of course in my case it simply lead to coins with boats.(I'll never finish my Mercury dime set) Sounds to me like you are enjoying yourself. It ends when you say it ends. Until then, enjoy the "ride". Of course in my case that lead to coins with horses. It never ends.

Don't question it, there are far worse things that can manipulate and control your life. At least with coins you resell them, and for a profit sometimes as well. Just go with the flow.

I feel your pain!
My goals for this year were to get more organized and close out open sets before buying anything else. So far I have had some success on the first but not so much on the second goal.

Don't look at big silver crown size coins from all over the world, many hundreds of years old, priced lower than a common Morgan dollar... Don't explore Civil War tokens, many of which look like Indian cents, many of which can still be had for a tiny fraction of the price of those Indian cents... For sure forget Ancient Coins. You get 2000+ year old original coins in nice condition with recognizable historic rulers for a few bucks, with tons below $50 each... Never, ever explore the low mintage of Three Cent Nickels and how little they sell for, even in mint state... In short, you are now doomed, like all of us...

IMO, I think the biggest mistake that US collectors make is thay they forget that there are other coins outside the US realm of collecting, and these "extraneous" coins are considered "junk." As prices are artificially inflated by big-pocket investors, many US collectors are starting to abandon this collecting area for foreign coins (crowns, ancients, etc.) because they seem like great deals for what they are.

Quote:Don't look at big silver crown size coins from all over the world, many hundreds of years old, priced lower than a common Morgan dollar... Gee thanks. Kind of like telling an alcoholic there's more foreign brands than just the domestic stuff he's been drinking I was interested in forming a collection of Napoleon 1st Silver coins but I know nothing about them, or even if they exist. Where's a good place to go to learn?

Forget alcoholic. If you move to foreign coins you will be on an I.V. drip. I'm trying to ween myself off them now. Don't do it. Those Swiss Shooting Medals are really cool.

It ends with you becoming the creature Gollum. Maybe a little strange to others but generally living a happy existence, especially when looking at and adding to one's precious hoard of coins.

I made a definite decision not to collect foreign (I do not consider Canadian coins as foreign) coins. Its not a mistake to me b/c my coins also are representative of the history of the US> The story of the rise of America is unique in the world and I cherish that history to the extent it seems to excludes a desire to have coins from other countries (with a few exceptions). I have a huge bunch of foreign that I never look at. It was collected when a kid. I don't even know where it is for sure now though! I am glad there are others out there who like the foreign coins as its also important history to be preserved, but to me there is just no appeal. Admittedly though, the ancients (Rome) are something I want to look into b/c I feel that history specifically is related to my own heritage moreso than, let's say, Australia (I like their older coins for aesthetics but cannot relate to the history since my roots are in no way connected to Oz). I am the same in my other main hobby of glass insulators. Most foreign pieces just don't appeal to me, but I do have a few for their aesthetic appeal (especially a large, purple bell shaped one from Oz - can't beat it in the morning sun!)

I don't buy coins because they're in a set or whatever. I just buy them because I think they look interesting/nice. :)

End? There is no stinkin' end! It's not supposed to end. It is a hobby like a thousand other hobbies. It drives some people stark raving mad and keeps others sane. It fills the vast monotonous hours between life's inevitable failures. It makes wise men out of fools and turns the wise into fools. Would you truly want it to end?
