Years ago I collected Morgans PCGS Certified mostly 62 to 62's with no rhyme or reason just what I thought looked good but I ended up selling them all over several moves So when we finally settled where I plan on staying for a while I started up again this time with a plan. I would buy to the PCGS " Morgan dollars with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes" and buy the highest grade for each coin in the set I could for up to $500 But then I looked t some Morgan DMPL's and just needed to buy some and plan to buy more. Barbers also caught my fancy so I am working on filling out a PCGS " Barber dimes with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes" and am working on filling out that set Now last week I bought a Silver Eagle PR70DCAM PCGS and suddenly found I bought 8 more So were does it end? It doesn't end. Collectors always find something else to collect.

You tell yourself you will stay focused ... then you see something round and shiny ... And there is no way to say no .....

Focus? I'm now focused on 5 sets instead of 1. All my goal is now is to complete 1 set before I add any new ones

With the exception of a US type set, I have completely abandoned US set collecting. I find myself buying coins with much more freedom and cooler backstories that way.

You can always have your wife step in like mine did, and said enough. However, I just purchased 600+ Indian Head cents on my own nickel.

I think I'll encourage you to continue what you're doing. Over time you will figure out what floats your "boat". Of course in my case it simply lead to coins with boats.(I'll never finish my Mercury dime set) Sounds to me like you are enjoying yourself. It ends when you say it ends. Until then, enjoy the "ride". Of course in my case that lead to coins with horses. It never ends.

Don't question it, there are far worse things that can manipulate and control your life. At least with coins you resell them, and for a profit sometimes as well. Just go with the flow.

I feel your pain!
My goals for this year were to get more organized and close out open sets before buying anything else. So far I have had some success on the first but not so much on the second goal.

Don't look at big silver crown size coins from all over the world, many hundreds of years old, priced lower than a common Morgan dollar... Don't explore Civil War tokens, many of which look like Indian cents, many of which can still be had for a tiny fraction of the price of those Indian cents... For sure forget Ancient Coins. You get 2000+ year old original coins in nice condition with recognizable historic rulers for a few bucks, with tons below $50 each... Never, ever explore the low mintage of Three Cent Nickels and how little they sell for, even in mint state... In short, you are now doomed, like all of us...

IMO, I think the biggest mistake that US collectors make is thay they forget that there are other coins outside the US realm of collecting, and these "extraneous" coins are considered "junk." As prices are artificially inflated by big-pocket investors, many US collectors are starting to abandon this collecting area for foreign coins (crowns, ancients, etc.) because they seem like great deals for what they are.
