Could the Blakesley Effect be part of the reason the rim does not show up on an out of collar strike ?

This effect generally occurs or associated with an out of round blank going through the upset process is unable to raise or create the proto rim correctly.

Pete, we may need to go back to the early 1800's to find a die with no design rim included on the die itself. I know of known used on common US coins circulating today. Thanks, Doug.

Thanks, Doug.
I am with you - I think you are correct. The only reason I was persuing the question is because the possibility of such shoulderless dies existing today was raised at an earlier point in this thread.

Here is an interesting article which discusses a coin's proto rim and design rim.

Lets factor in also off centers as they show the edge where the die ends on them as well.

I have found another explanation for a situation where the design rim is not present: "peripheral die expansion and erosion." One pair of dies of the 2014-P Jefferson nickel show this feature.

I'm still kicking the idea around for now. See what others can find. The information in the past made me think it was the edge of the die, but now I'm starting to re-think this subject. It maybe both or just one. So I'm keeping the jury in yet on this one.

My research has established that there is a shoulder on the dies for all US coins which, along with the collar, creates the design rim. The proto rim is created during upsetting.

The off center strikes are interesting. The Ike dollar, for example, shows a complete design rim. Most of the others show a partial design rim, while some show no design rim. It seems to me that where there is no design rim on off center strikes (be it on the full strike area or on a portion), the most logical explanation is a slightly tilted die - which would be expected from an off center strike.

Coop, Halo's and my thoughts are with you and yours. Tell Mrs Cooper our thoughts and prayers come from Texas, so they're big ones. Thanks, Doug.
