Unlikely, unless you said something untoward that the moderator picked up late.

I feel bad, this man put a lot of time into this and it is almost worth nothing.

It was his hobby and I'm sure he enjoyed it. If there is anyone else in the family that has any interest, they may appreciate the collection. Or maybe, some day, you will enjoy it.

If you're determined to let it go, you might look for a local coin club and donate the coins for their young numismatists. Or sell to a local coin shop -- after all, there is some silver in that collection.

If you have any questions about offers from a coin shop, feel free to ask.

I understand not having time to sort through a lot of coins that I don't know much about.

I'll say at least take T-BOP's advice and search for those to pick out. Crazyb0 also added some good ones to look for. The rest can generally go to someone else that's willing to sort it all out.

Just don't let those high-dollar ones go for nothing if there are any in the lot.

Hi and Welcome!

You asked if they are worth more than face value and the answer is YES. You said that there were hundreds of Mercury dimes and the like. The Mercury dimes are silver... do not sell at face value!

For example, the Mercury dime is worth 1.26 for each one. The Roosevelt dime is worth 1.26 each for dates up through 1964. Since he worked in the 50's and 60's, he will have many of those dates.

The silver nickels are 1942-1945 and each of those are worth about a 1.00.

Yes, some of the dates that have been mentioned will go for even more in good condition but the regular everyday 90% silver ones will go for far more than their face value.

So, if you have 100 Mercury dimes, the melt value or silver value would be 126.00.

Hope that helps...

Once again, thank you all for the advice and great information concerning the coins. I might make time to sort these out and possibly share with you all the findings.

On a side note to this story; he had over 1,000 sleeves of stamps from around the world as well as coins and medals. It is funny how some stamps he had un-hinged from the 30's and 40's are only worth a dollar or two.

I am glad he enjoyed his hobbies as I know I do.

Coinology, I wanted to email you but your email is turned off. Stamps really tanked over the years for whatever reason? I rarely see or hear anything about them anymore. I have a old collection, but I haven't looked at it in years.

You might find it is worth your time if you found any rather expensive coins. And don't forget to watch carefully for the 1945 Mercury dime with full bands on the reverse. Could be worth hundreds to thousands.
