Yes I'd fly up to Chicago and offer to take pictures with my Sony Mavica MVC-FD5 if only I could find some floppy discs.

People base prices of items that they know nothing about from ebay. You can ask for a million dollars for something on ebay but that means nothing. First, I cannot conceived of paying 75,000 bucks for coins I have not inspected. This is a guy throwing something against a wall to see if it sticks.

ebay actually sent me an email informing me the listing is ending soon. Doesn't look like any takers.

Quote:1.1796 quarter 2.1893 columbian quarter 3.1795 half dollar 4.1878 Indian Head penny5.there was a coin listed here, but we couldn't find the coin listed in one of the coin books we used, so either it was a typo or one of the rarest coins in U.S. monetary history. the coin was listed as a 1858 Half Cent, so if it really is a 1858 Half Cent, it was made by the mint, but supposedly never distributed like the 1933 20 dollar piece , supposedly never placed in circulation, but some escaped the melting pot and survived and were found some years ago. HOWEVER , NEW INFORMATION HAS COME TO OUR ATTENTION that in the Red Book of coin values, under Half Cents, it says 'proofs and restrikes were made at the mint for sale to collectors, restrikes are believed to have been struck c.1858-59. so this coin might be real, although since we are not coin dealers, we would not be able to tell if the coin is restrike or not. so I am not including the coin in the lot until further notice and we get a professional assessment of the coin. I sent a note asking him to post detail photos of coins #1 & #3. Also, reading from coin #5 info, I think he realizes some of his high value coins might be counterfeits, using his ebay name, "lousyphotos". There is a good chance he will not post detail photos. If he does not, then chances are that he is trying to defraud buyers using ignorance as a defense.

OK, I'm a suspicious sort, but my first thought on reading the original post was that a guy who is looking for coin collectors who have $75k to drop--and who will insist on PERSONALLY delivering said coins to that collector--is up to no good. The fact that you've seen him around before makes that less likely, but I'd still be very cautious about giving any info that might give him my name or address. Just saying.

Crazy though it is, I rather doubt that this is the craziest ebay listing-unfortunately.

I heard a rumor this guy may be a bit more nefarious than I thought. Spoke to a collector who said they heard at a show somebody had contacted the police regarding this.

Looks like ebay took the listing down. I can't find any trace of it.

He was so over the top silly that it seemed harmless but I hear he was REALLY ramping up asking people to pay via bank wires and said he would sell some of the "very rare" coins he mentioned as well but if person used Paypal had to be in a gift form or the seller would have to wait 60 days to get the coin if not (I believe Paypal Buyer Protection expires after 45 days).
Might not of been so harmless after all. I looked at @MikeF is right. I guess he relisted it and was removed.
