Should I really keep PRE-1959 Nickels. are they worth anything?

I'd suggest buying a RedBook too.....that'll have all of the information in there for you and you can read for yourself what to look for with your nickels or any other coin.........
You'll be blessed to find a " War Nickel" or two and even luckier to find a " Buffalo nickel"......and keep anything else "old" (pre-'59) and in decent condition.IMHO

In addition to dates watch for coins that appear blurry. Could be a double die. If you purchased a copy of the Red Book about page 390 there is a lot of information on error coins. You may find some of them too.

also any die breaks, misaligned dies, and off center strikes they tend to show up in nickels more than other denominations and are quite possible to find in a box I usualy see at least one misaligned die ever two boxes or so. Also any proofs you may find, although you would probobly have to go through at least 15-20 boxes to have a real shot at finding one of those.

I found a real rusted 1937 Buffalo. I'm going to try to take all the rust off because its in horrible condition.

1964S,
Great start if you found that Buffalo in your first box! I'm averaging a Buffalo in every 375 rolls or so, so they are really tough! And thanks jbuck for clearing up the 1942's; don't know why I put 43-45 instead of 42-45. I also forgot to mention proofs (thanks XoG!) Grab yourself another box, 1964S, and keep up the great finds!

I still havent finsihed looking through the box.
First I looked for only Buffalos. I found one in my last roll
Then I looked for 1990D without FG
Then I Looked for early high grade dates. though I didnt find many. I found a brilliant 1967.
Now I'm going to look through the coins for the Silver War Nickel.

I dont think Nickels are my thing. I prefer Pennies and Halves. I was just test trying the nickels, but the boxes seem a little depressing. you find like 4-5 keepers. IN Halves I find like a 2-3 silvers every roll. In pennies I find alot of copper and 15 Wheaties and some errors and great BU's

"2 or 3 silvers in every roll" of halves? I'm moving to your town!! Anyway, there is a lot out there to collect; you have to go after what "turns you on". If nickels are not your thing, by all means give them up; no reason to collect something that isn't fun for you. Besides, at 2-3 silvers per roll I'd be doing nothing but halves in your area!

Yea, but it is very hard to get Boxes of Halves though. The banker really give you a hard time. I go to Bank Of America. I dont think there really any collectors in my town. Only me.

BOA is my bank... The tellers look at me like I'm crazy when I ask them for halves. I went in the other day and asked for a roll. They had 2 in the branch... not rolls... 2 half dollars.

the reason I search halves is mainly to try to complete a full set of jeffersons from circulation. From my own point of view there really the only set outside of Kennedy half dollars that you can complete from circulation, since its relatively easy to find almost all the dates even those from the 40's and 50's.
