They make me sad, too. But I appreciate these two coins for what they are. inherited from my grandfather who got them from his father. I can see the beauty in them in spite of the damage.

I was gonna say this should be called "The Cringe and Cry Thread." I'm not sure If I have any holed coins either (that weren't minted that way). I do have a couple Vatican coins somewhere but no pictures handy.

Let's get on with the holed coins here before I get my drill out. Sorry I got this thread off track.

Man, they took poor Ms. Liberty's head off in one of those. Seems this was a pretty common thing to do in the 19th century. Thanks everyone for the comments and pics.

Thanks for sharing. These coins obviously meant something to someone! Enough to want to keep them and wear them.

Darn, today I just got done putting all my floating coins in 2x2's and changing out the rest to clean 2x2's, do have a bunch but can't get good pix through window plastic to prove it! One of my first when "restarting" was in a batch of inherited coins, a VF 1865 3-cent, must have had history because that side of family was around central MO from Civil war days...think it was a birth-year coin but can't verify.
