Interesting replies. I really enjoyed reading them all.
For me ... knowing all the numbers will be very helpful when I talk to my kids about my collection. If they don't know what the true value is, they might end up dumping or selling my collection cheap, after I am gone.
Of course the face value in most cases will be a very small number compared to the true value of a collection. But if your collection ends up with a relative, that is not a collector, that might be their starting point of coming up with a value.

Quote: The face value of your collection is not meaningless. I agree with jbuck for his reasons, and if nothing else you have a starting point for an insurance claim if in the unfortunate event it is ever needed. Insurance companies will only pay face value to replace coins/notes, they won't take into account market value of collectibles unless you have paid for a rider or separate policy.

That's why a photo record is imperative if you plan on REALLY inventorying your collection. It can be proven what was in there in case of disaster...although you will play h**l getting any insurance weenie to honor it. It will help in the event of theft, which is a real possibility for those not savvy enough to have purchased a safe! (and secured it in place...) And besides which, it ain't none o' yer business! Just advertise here ..."Come and Get it!"

You tell the kids, "You can spend it and get X, but if you make an effort you can get a large multiple of X!" Again, context. Without it your heirs might just think it is not worth their time to properly liquidate and just take it to the bank.

Along with my inventory ,I have left percific instructions for my Grandchildren of what I would like them to do with my collection when I'm gone . And that every Cent I have is worth more than face value . I also told them when the time comes to join CCF ,and that they will be more than glad to help you out with any questions they may have .

Hello, In the End it is all about Money. The face Value of my coins does not tell me much. I went with the Catalog Value from NGC and got a Value of 26.000$. Now I took about 33% off that Value and end up with 8700$. That is about Right.......I think?

According to online converters, my Yugoslavian 50,000,000 dinara note is equivalent to over $30M US. ...and I got it for free! P.S. I gotta get me some of those Zimbabwe notes!

Hi, everyone. You are all cracking me up with your silly cents and underrated bouillon of gold & silver soups of accumulation. You are all so humble with what you got. What matters is the positive growth experience and enjoyment this hobby brings. Adrenalin rush keeps the heart strong and healthy. Let's keep on going....
