It is always hard to discern details via online photos. These photos appear to have been taken through the mylar coin flip. Is there any way you could send additional photos? Maybe in natural lighting outside the flip, from different angles? $80 is still $80; and we certainly want to avoid the need for returns.
Also, could you please let me know if, in your opinion, this coin has been cleaned or had anything else done to it that would prevent it from being certified by PCGS or NGC?

Look up coin shows in your area. Also, try coin clubs. I hate ebay for just what your going through. |

ok, ok...good teasing on the snipe comment!  tough crowd. so, about the color, are folks saying silver coins don't naturally tone this way? I've often seen light "russet" type toning. |

The seller has holes in his game. Most of the time that I have taken a risk on Seller's with that much negative feedback, I was disappointed with the purchase. The coin is most likely a details coin AT or cleaned. You were the winner in this auction by not getting the coin.

Lots of sellers tint/photoshop their photos, and just the fact this seller reacted badly to your request is a red(pink) flag for this one. The 2x2 looks a bit pink too, so I'm not sure how much toning the coin has. My guess is some perimeter toning, that's it. Edited by edweather

Just from the sellers attitude I would black list him from future bids or BIN . And yes a 10 second snipe gives other bidders time to snipe you .  |

Thanks for the insights on this guys! I had noticed that coins do not seem to be this seller's main focus, and this was the only recent Mercury dime or coin in a mylar flip in his recently completed sales list. So I was thinking I'd give him the benefit of the doubt (somewhat)..ok, maybe he didn't even take these photos himself and doesn't want to be bothered to do so, and if this coin is as good as it looks (AU or possibly even MS), he clearly doesn't know what he has (i.e. you don't post such crappy photos on such a high quality coin). Based on just carl's good advice, I did hit up the monthly coin show here in Syracuse. Not too many dealers with higher grade early date mercs, but I made some contacts and will be reaching out with wish lists. I agree that being able to consider coins in hand is much better than taking a wild guess on iffy photos on ebay...on top of dealing with my slow trigger finger. |

Not sure about the color, could be lighting reflection, the detail warrant at least a low AU grade. No way to tell if its been cleaned or not, I would have taken the chance myself if I spot it.

Actually, I thought it looked pretty good, easily better than XF, but with the seller's response to your inquiry, no way I would have bid.

Like has been said, color on cardboard shows incandescent lighting in background which is consistently pinkish/orange and will reflect that way, that is NOT it's color, most likely dark and splotchy, poor coin, you bit the bullet on this one, would have been sorely disappointed.
