If they are prints, yes. If they are toning that has acted on the moisture in the prints to create a print fossil on the coin, then you need acid to remove them.

Once fingerprints show there has been damage.
If you give them an acetone bath that will stop them from getting worse.
And with luck the damage will be so light that it's not noticeable.
And since they came from a roll I suggest giving the acetone treatment to the ones that don't show fingerprints (yet).

Were there 20 ASE's in the roll? If so, that's a major score getting ASE's for less than spot. That said, I just don't understand why people can't handle coins properly. |

Dip them in acetone. It may not remove the fingerprints. If that doesn't work, dip one or two in E-Z-Est or MS70.

It was partially successful. I had 2 with hints of fingerprints that were completely removed after multiple soaks in acetone. Another 3 coins had more fossilized fingerprints. While the prints did fade they weren't completely removed. I think I will give them another bath tomorrow.
Does anyone know what the recommended length of time is for acetone baths? If I go longer than say 5 minutes do I risk damaging the coin?

You can leave it in there for weeks, pure acetone will not hurt the coin. However, if you let the acetone evaporate, whatever it removed from the coin will redeposit back onto it.

Okeedokie then. Thanks, gang! If the prints faded on those three, I would think a day long bath might remove them completely.
