I'd try soaking in acetone then see what remains. Might be an old coating of some type of varnish applied to the surface. Thanks, Doug.

I've got it in acetone right now.

If that doesn't do much I may try Verdicare.

Here it is after a soak in acetone and treatment with Verdicare.

Sorry about the cat hair on the reverse. It's an occupational hazard when you live in a house with four felines.
