Thanks for the guesses so far! I don't see anything special in the notes either but knowing him there is some reason. Actually, these went from his box, to my parents, and now I guess I will stick them in mine for my children to puzzle on in 40 years. If this goes on long enough they just might have value ;-)
PS there was also a mini hoard of BARR notes (the treasury secretary that served for 28 days in 1963 or so. Not sure what to do with those either, I don't know if they are worth more than face as they are circulated.

to CCF. BARR notes that are CU sell for a premium on the bay to the less informed collector. John1

Did grandpa put dollar bills in birthday and holiday cards? Could be the stash he used for these events....

The word "sequential" is probably the key. Sold in lots of 3 or more should get a slight premium.

so far the best answer prize goes to nfine, though I don't want to think about grandpa in Vegas with that big stack of dollar bills.

Carter~!! I'm sure when my son opens my little safe and deposit boxes he is going to have some of these same questions. I have some coins with nice value, and some without any / little above face. "Why in the world did my Mom save these?" Please tell him for me....just cause!

Only if they are sequential or 'special ' numbers I see nothing significant although myself I'd keep them for sentimental reasons

In 1973, CBS sold the Yankees for 10 million, the Dolphins had a perfect season, and the Vietnam War ended- and, that was just in January! [ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1973_...nited_States] Maybe, Grandpa had some sentiment for an event that year. But, just having new bills in sequence begs the impulse to save them.

I remember when we got a new, sequentially numbered stack of bills from the bank, they seemed somehow "special" back then. There was somewhat of a notion that in the future, people may want to have sets of sequential notes. While my grandfather and I never put away a whole stack of 50.00 (a lot more money in those days), we did save some smaller runs of sequential numbers that would sometimes show up in his bill changers.

Great mystery. I can't come up with any reason that hasn't already been thrown out there.
