I agree with Coop and chafemasterj. I am not one of the experts of the Modern Coins forum like coop, John1, E&V, Crazyb0, and others, but I try to help out in the modern coins forum. Usually I look at the image the OP has posted and answer the question myself. If one of the experts have answered before me, I'll see what they think. If their opinion is different than mine, I try to understand the logic behind their opinion and see if mine is wrong. I always enjoy learning and helping others in the Modern Coins forum.

Quote: E n V sorry to confused you..LOL That's okay. I was confused a little bit at first, but now I know and I get your point. Quote: A huge thank you to E&V for his giveaway. Soon I'll have a doubled die in hand to examine. I think that will help straighten out my thoughts a little. You're very welcome! It should help you out a lot on what to look for. Maybe the next time, when I do another giveaway, I should have newer members join in and have other members that missed out join in as well.
Errers and Varietys.

We are getting more all the time. I've seen over 100 threads in a day. When I start answering, the new posts come in or new responses from the old posts. It makes it hard to get to the bottom of the page. The other spots on the site are not this busy. But it helps me keep my gray matter in order.

Bate, I sent you a message. Keep at it, it will eventually come, you may not get it all at first, but a lot of life's skills can be learned!

I've never had a personal interest in varieties nor errors. You guys have done such a magnificent job of explaining and demonstrating those topics that I've picked up a few pointers nearly by accident. Because of you, I received the two Cherry picker books earlier this week. I've already been snooping through my collection with those books in hand. A conversation to the dark side for sure

@Bate Quote: .soon enough you'll be helping teach the next crop of folks. I'm right there with you Bate. Like I mentioned prior the different types of doubling confuses me too. We'll get there. You have TONS more hands on experience than me. Almost everything I've learned is from the Forum.

I guess "cause" and "affect" is probably how my brain operates. (1)What could cause this? ( 2) How would that affect it? Probably the first two questions that go through my mind. (3)If something is incuse on raised devices. It is probably damage or contact from something. (4) Think what a die would create. Incuse on the die = raised on the coin. Raised on the die = incuse on the coin. (5) Keep in mind that every thing wears. So did something change in shape? Breakdown? or altered PSD.

I find it helpful to have a few actual varieties and error certified coins when I started collecting, buy some inexpensive coins for reference, better than pictures.

It just takes time is all.. It helps knowing the minting process, as in what can go wrong where, and having a working knowledge of the errors and varieties already out there -- which take time to learn and understand.. Simple.. Swamp

Bate, My (2 cent) approuch is similar as some already mentioned. Make your own decision first, then look at what others respond. Remember if it differs does not always mean they're right, nor does it mean you're wrong. The more research into why and why not the easier it seems to become.
If its already committed or answered as I see it, I move on. If I see something out of place or not already mentioned as I see it, I'll try and point it out as best I can. If I'm wrong I still learned something.
Images and lighting can fool the eye. So knowing what can and can't happen helps conclude what the mind is making out of it.
As for Doubled Dies vs MD. Some types are straight forward clear as day, while some not so much. I stopped making snap calls and use the support sites and references I've abtained to help confirm my thoughts before I put it in writing. Early on I would read through the CCF archives (few pages a day) by sorting the topic forum by last post in ascending order. Like a soap opera you learn quick who are the main characters and how they progress, think and diagnose an issue. Also gain a lot of coin related resources in the process. Sadly some charecters are no longer active, but still left there mark and knowledge behind here in the forums.
Remember even the experts are wrong now and again. Sometimes quick to jump to a conclusion. I have only myself to blame if I don't know when. Thanks, Doug.

Thank you, but we are doing what we do here everyday. Why. Because we know someone will benefit from the discussions. Sometimes we fill in each other blanks. So it is not a one man effort. It takes family.

Don't hesitate to ask questions too, regardless if it's your post or not. THere are plenty of times someone gives an opinion and I think it may be something else or am not sure how they got to that point or just plain don't see it and so I ask why is it that or why wouldn't it be this. I've learned more that way probably then just posting and asking if it's a dd or something cause then you usually get a good explanation and if it's coop your questioning then your def gonna know afterwards cause chances are youre gonna get multiple examples with pics inlcuded.
