Photographing coins Meow has found is very difficult. The fact that coins are shiny makes it even harder. This the best Meow could do with what Meow had. Hmmm, Maybe Meow should have taken that photography class instead of the graphic design class in high school...... And cameras not made for paws........

You will notice that depending on the angle of the light source, some of the cracks disappear, like on the reverse. And become less noticeable on the obverse. Also this particular photo angle of the obverse obscures the third die crack on the bun of her hair in the back. The die cracks on the reverse are finer that the ones on the obverse, so Meow had to get the light angle just right to photograph the reverse ones. The one going through the second L on the reverse is particularly hard to capture in photos. The line you see in this particular reverse shot going through the L is a light scratch. The die crack that became invisible in this shot actually goes in the second L at an angle opposite to the scratch, and intersects it on the horizontal tip of the L. The scratch intersects the right angle part of the L. Maybe Meow has said too much. Will let the pictures do the talking now.

Die cracks are common in Peace dollars. They don't add a premium to the value.

But on the other hand, would it lower its value? Since it has 5 cracks overall, Catsonally Meow feels it makes it a little less pretty.

Firstly like many have mentioned the cracks are really common for these since The Mint ran those dies until they reached critical mass. They didn't take away from the grade the coin was given but maybe a little in eye appeal which is subjective. Personally I think the cracks give it a uniqueness and some character. Most anyone would be happy as punch to add this to their collection.

Secondly, the third person (umm cat) thing is growing on me and "Catsonally" is a nice touch. Have a nice week!

Meow is not much of a fan of Peace dollars too. But did not have an example of one in Meow's collection. Typical Peace dollars look awful. They are all dinged up or scratched up like the couch. And to get a nice one, one needs to get one in grade ms66 or better. Most ms65 examples are not very pretty at all, and higher grade can be quite pricy. So when Meow saw a reasonably price one that was so pretty, Meow just had to get Meow's paws (through holder or mittens) on one. So when Meow found this very pretty, and reasonably priced coin Meow bought it. But later found out that is was not all cracked up to be. With the emphasis on cracked.

But from what Meow has gleaned from others here, is that it is not a fake. And upon researching further, Meow has found out they do fake all years of Peace dollars; Even the common years. But so far Meow has not seen a fake with the cartwheel luster present. And Meow's coin cartwheels well.

So SilverDollar2017, do you agree that for a anacs ms65 it looks pretty darn good?

Meow did not expect get be so much enjoyment sharing about coin collecting. Meow bought a Morgan a day before the Peace dollar, and a Meow's first Walking Liberty a week before. Meow would like to share them with everyone. Meow has a limited budget, so tries to get the nicest possible with an affordable price. Hope you guys like them.

Meow found it difficult to find affordable Morgans with out noticeable dings. The Morgan Meow found is fairly dingless with only mild abrasions to her face. Hmmmm....Meow is now wondering what a PL or DMPL would feel like between the paws. The Walker is also a very pretty coin. It is totally blast white, and is the shiniest coin Meow owns.

Looks nice for ANACS MS-65.

I suggest you purchase PCGS and NGC graded coins until you have more experience. They are known to be more accurate in grading than ANACS.

Meow thinks that would be ideal too. But PCGS versions of the same coins would have cost as much as 50% more. And Meow read, buy the coin and not the holder; Many times on forums. But the PCGS holder is nicer. Meow has a few War Nickels in PCGS, and they are real shiny and pretty too. Meow's first coins purchased where those Nickels. At least War Nickels can be affordable in PCGS higher grades. Meow's collection started with a PCGS MS66FS 1943d nickel.

Yes - definitely buy the coin and not the holder.

Remember a graded coin, once broken out, is never guaranteed the same grade. Plus the grade can vary depending on the company it is sent to. Each company has its own set of standards.

As to fakes, search the forum here for some great posts on them.

Since you are a graphic artist, you should be able to do some overlays when in doubt.

As to taking decent pics - its really not that hard with a cell phone. Here is a GREAT thread by member Darth Morgan.

I improvised with 5.00 Walmart desk lamps. It is not purrrrfect, but until I get serious about coin photography, it will do:

Meow should knock off the third party references, it's annoying.

A Cat does what a Cat does. Try herding us, and you will find out.

Meow sees the very ingenious ways one can go about taking good photos without professional equipment. Thanks for sharing.

And thank you all for your input. Well, besides the Cat hater.
