Your right jbuck. I'm a huge error and variety collector. That's probably why I hunt only pennies most of the time.

Halves for errors and varieties. DDOs, DDRs, etc, are generally overlooked by silver hunters.

I like nickels because it's the only denomination where you can get coins above face easily in Canada.

Back in 1979 I was a roll hunter. It was pretty tough to find silver then. I found silver so much easier and abundant when I started back up in 2008.

I primarily look for silver so dimes are the best for that I also do cents sometimes in search of wheats and copper memorials however they are very time consuming to search and cumbersome to return

JB was right, the Hunt Bros. They drove silver prices to a peak in '79-80, at a time when the country was going through a recession, high unemployment and interest rates approaching 20%, there were many roll hunters. Full page ads in the local newspapers, BUYING SILVER. Good money, when adjusted for inflation, $45/oz then is $150/oz today.

When it all crashed, many still held their hoard. Silver prices dropped to a tenth of the previous high, and collections were later dumped, to end up at the banks for future roll hunters to find, and wow were they plenty!

For me, nickels and halves are the best to crh. With nickels, there is just so much variety to the possibilities of what you can find. They are like pennies, which are also fun to hunt, but you can find silver in some. With halves, silver is more abundant and coming in larger sizes, it makes me excited as a stacker. Happy Hunting!

1.Nickels
2.Halves
3.Cents
4.Dimes
5.Quarters
6.Dollars

The advantage with nickels is that you can complete the set.

Yup... And actually, you should be able to take that nickel set all the way back to 1934 without too much trouble if you're persistent.
CRH Nickeloholic. 1,600,000 nickels searched in eight years! Have found FOUR complete Jefferson sets!

I mostly agree with John77, but I'd place Dollars above Quarters, since there could be that rare opportunity where you could hunt the large rolls, and when factoring in teller's trays, the odds of finding something interesting go up more. And even so, I more frequently find those 1979-P Wide Rims, 1981 NIFCs, and proofs compared to quarters on the common, small-sized coins, as quarters by far have the lowest find rate.

10-15 years ago, I'd place halves at the top since this was before silver went up to $30 and also before this forum really took off, meaning that fewer people knew about CHRing, and is still a decent way to look for silver, but it seems like since people don't care about nickels as much since they're hardly used in transactions like quarters still are and the fact that not many are aware of the WWII silver and even buffaloes, along with some relatively low mintage coins out there, make it the most fun search in terms of having an interesting find out there.

I like cents best. I'm searching quarters now but that's just to cautch up my ATB Quarters. I searched nickels up until recently but I'm not finding any good nickels these days.

I now just usually just search cents. One silver quarter in $2000 was just not worth the effort. The silver in half dollars around here has all but dried up. I usually find around 3 silver dimes in a $1000 bag. I usually find one or two silver nickels in a $200 bag. The dollar coins can be interesting especially looking for the wounded eagle on the 2000 SAC. Back in August I went through around 10 or 12 boxes and did find 7 or 8. With cents I can sell off the extra varieties and purchase just as much silver without having to pack all of the heavier change back to the dump bank. I also will sometimes get the other bags just to catch up on sets.

Here in Canada, too bad we don't have pennies anymore, so I'll say that dimes are my favorite denomination for hunting, because of the relatively high chance of finding silver. As a matter of fact.....

Here in Michigan I've found over 150 silver Canadians while roll hunting dimes. That would be great to hunt silver dimes in canada 'cause all you'd have to do is drag a magnet through the pile and keep what doesn't stick!
