@Spence, thanks for that link. I had looked at some other Fat Man threads, but I didn't see that one. I just counted the denticles, and there are 101 wide denticles and 100 thin denticles on the obverse, same as the coin in that thread. My eyes tired out before I got to the reverse. I assume it still might be counterfeit, but it looks good to me, too. Thanks everyone for your opinions!

In the 1990's I use to have trouble getting $20 for one of these.

I don't think you need to count dentils here. This is a legit coin with what appears to be an unusually dark patina. Perhaps it is just the image.

This is a nice XF-AU specimen.

The dark patina is actually pretty accurate. I like the look of it, and I'm glad the consensus seems to be genuine. When I have time, I'll post some photos of those Chinese memento dollars.

I had posted this coin a few years ago, and I finally decided to send it in last month for authentication and encapsulation, mainly because it's an heirloom piece and I wanted to make sure it was genuine. I was surprised at the grade--shows how little I know about grading foreign coins...

Congratulations, Zurie! It would be a good idea to write up the family history of this coin on paper to be included with the slab for your heirs.
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

Very nice result!
It's great to have a questioned coin come back as it did!
I have so many look-a-likes sometimes it's hard for me to offer an earlier opinion on a photo alone.
I can only think of a couple or very few look-a-likes I've had over the years that ended up being genuine.

Thanks everyone. I'm obviously pleased with the result. @Hondo, it was passed down by my father, and I believe he had it for many years. But I don't have any history beyond that, so I guess the family history will start with him.

I was reading back and also underestimated the grade. I very much like the color and look of this example. Congrats to you.

Nah, neither of you are crazy... This is a prime example of NGC grading too generously - particularly in higher circ grades.

That said, this is a nice deeply toned original piece - a slight circ cameo thing going on - with a lot of meat left.

Zurie,

That's a very nice example and NGC gave a generous grade for the coin. I remember in the 90's, my in-law would buy these for around 100 RMB, now price has multiply by nearly 10x and higher.

Grading has never been much concern for my collecting.
I did read somewhere, maybe in Krause, that grading for world coins differs from how American coins are graded.
Not sure how these various grading companies deal with that.
If I ever submitted a coin, I'd do it just to confirm or deny authenticity, but I wouldn't give a hoot about some person's subjective opinion of a grade.
Wouldn't surprise me even if some of these people could even get an authentic coin to be non-genuine or perhaps a non-genuine coin to be authentic.

Nice one! Glad that you held onto it. It will be a good family heirloom.
