Better before and after pictures are needed. I can't tell much from these pics. This should be fun.

OK, here are some closeups. Taken through the packaging as received. What you think so far -- any better VAM? Does it have a shot at MS?

Looking forward to see'n 'er out of wrapper and acetone treatment. I think she has a shot.

I wouldn't consider that MS from the amount of rub seen in those close-ups

I like the results. Got the dark spots completely out, as well as the surface haze. Hard to tell from the pics, but coin is now nice and bright without the use of anything other than a few minutes in acetone. Cheek is clean and strike pretty strong.

Here are some additional AFTER pictures. Some close ups appear to show hairlines, but under magnification they appear to be die polishing lines. After all, these came from GSA bags so unlikely anyone would have messed with them. I've seen PCGS MS-63 examples of this date with far less detail than this one exhibits (I used to own one).

I will probably submit to TPG for grading, I think it will go MS-something. What do you think?

AU50-AU53 grading off the original pictures which show lots of rub and only partial luster mainly towards the periphery. The fields show scratches and hairlines.

Looking at the last two pictures, the cheek and the field left of the bust are both clearly worn and roughed up. The hair, cap leaves, and breast feathers all show clear evidence of circulation as well -- notice how the frosty white appearance is broken by much darker grayish-silvery areas. The photos with the dark background and the uneven lighting make it very difficult to attempt to grade accurately; I might revise my opinion if I saw it in lighting more like the very first photos.

I mean no offense, so don't take this the wrong way, but the coin was much more valuable "as-is" in the original GSA soft pack.
GSA soft pack 80-O goes for around $200 to $240 if a TPG AU. A slabbed MS62 non-GSA 1880-O can be had around the same price.
However, a raw AU 1880-O separated from its GSA softpack is worth 20% or less of those values.

If you spend the TPG fee plus the add-ons, and it comes back AU, you're hammered. I don't see the upside, at least from these pics.

Well, I took this as an experiment. We will see what happens, will submit to TPG later this month. It wont break my heart what they grade it as since I did not pay much for it. No one has offered any VAM opinions, so I will probably add that as a TPG option and see what it comes back at -- why not.

The pictures aren't ideal but from what I see, it looks like chatter not rub in both the before and after pics.
