This is a political move that I would not expect to pass if it were about a Democratic president when the government is under mostly Republican control, or when the parties are switched.

When Carter passes, he'll get a dollar coin regardless of who is in control of what. At the very least, it's an easy way for politicians to appear bipartisan.

They could do a GHW Bush Coin & Chronicles without revisiting the Presidential dollar series. The 2009 Lincoln C&C didn't have the Lincoln's Presidential dollar (the Lincoln Presidential dollar wasn't released until 2010) and for obvious reasons the Benjamin Franklin and John Marshall sets didn't include Presidential dollars either.

Now... I'm not sure what else they would include in such a set besides perhaps a medal if not a newly-minted GHWB $1 coin.

the series is complete, let it die already

Politics aside, the series is technically only complete once the are no more presidents, and we still have some living and future ones. I wouldn't mind an open-ended bill allowing the mint to produce the next coin whenever a president dies.

Gold spouse coin?

Long way from a bill being introduced to becoming law. Thankfully...

Like killing the cent and the one dollar bill from circulation.

This should happen no matter which President passes.

I agree. The original series set a precedent. No need to penalize the remaining presidents for living long lives.

The latest actions listed on Congress.gov on this legislation are
Quote:
Senate (42 cosponsors) - 02/12/2019 Read twice and referred to the Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs.

House (8 cosponsors) - 02/13/2019 Referred to the House Committee on Financial Services.

The proposed legislation calls for the coins to be issued in 2019. With so little action on the legislation, and with the year nearly half over, IMHO the prospects for these coins is starting to fade.

At this point I think new legislation would have to be introduced. Some of those cosponsors may not even be around now.

edit: misread the date on the legislation. Also didn't think it all the way through. Penalty.

The legislation for these coins was introduced by the current Congress in both the Senate and the House. Why would there need to be new legislation introduced?

oops. I read "2017", not "2019". Time to get the eyes checked.
