He better be ready to take it back. Seems he can't understand the difference between DMPL and over polished/dipped

Well.....Um, lesson learned LOL, but it did straight grade. Now I have an idea what one looks like outside the slab and in hand vs what they will probably be grading it. School is in recess! :)

Hey, at least you learned something! Not a total loss but pretty close!

I was almost 100% sure it was going to come back with a straight grade because of the cart wheel, just hoped it was going to be a tiny bit higher,
Somebody called it on the button, with the slight wear on the cotton balls.
According to there definition of AU 58, it almost has full luster.
Most said no luster on it, and I think that adds to the argument that it is VERY difficult to grade by pictures.
I really did learn a lot going back over all the comments, and thank all for the input, most appreciated ,

Well I mentioned I was very surprised when you said it had any amount of luster, because from all indications in the pictures posted the coin had none. Just goes to show how hard luster can be to capture depending on the lighting. Will you return the coin to the dealer for a refund since it didn't get DMPL?

Very surprised it straight graded from the pictures to say the least. Although it looked to be a borderline coin, so 58 doesn't surprise me.

No I'll keep it, may offer it as a freebie on an auction, but I want to see it in a PCGS slab first, lol

Another factor to consider is that the 97's were known for good strikes and surfaces. A lot of times they are "market graded". Meaning that a coin graded as a 63, if it were another year/mm would come back as as 65. They get graded very harshly. They are not trying to saturate the market in gems. I had a coin that was a solid 66 that came back as a 63. I met a grader at one of the shows I attended and handed him the slab with the grade covered up, and he thought 65/66. When I showed him the grade he got real sheepish and explained to me what was going on. I had him re-submit it and it came back as a 65. Mind you, I have been at this since 1965.

The 1897 is an enigma. Superficially, it has a low mintage. It also has a very high survival rate from Pittman and Silver Act melting. IIRC, the Redfield hoard included at least two bags of 1897 dollars. There are a lot of relatively high grade coins, but few with truly beautiful appearances. Gun metal gray surfaces and really baggy coins are everywhere. I've handled exactly one 1897 that was graded "Gem Unc SPL" under the old grading standards of back in the day. I like the 1897, but yikes it is a toughie with eye pleasing surfaces and luster.

Well, seems your mind was made up to send it in regardless of what we had to say. Since it came back AU, are you going to send it back to the seller?

Nah, I didn't give that much for it, like I said, had a voucher to blow. May give it away on a auction freebie :)

Well, we can close this one out, but I do want to say, that coin came back in a BIG BLUE 20 slab holder, and it still looks MS 65 in the slab LOL. Over all it was a good experience.
I am impressed with what you get from PCGS with a voucher. All in all, I'm out about $67, but I have a nice story to tell and a nice case :)
Thanks everyone for not beating me up too bad.
As always I appreciate the candor!

The luster definitely came though on the TrueView photos, much more so than the original seller images. At least you got a straight grade out of it, and it's a nice looking coin.
