Just heavy wear, damage, and probably an old scrubbing.

It may have been a greased filled die when struck, but that has been over-ridden by 90 years of wear.

I was just looking at Grease Filled Dies and didn't want to rule that out yet. Could she take any measurements of thickness or weight to rule out (or confirm) Grease Filled Die?

Circulation wear wore the letters down. So it had to happen after the strike. The color tells me it was recently cleaned. It was probably very dark in color at one point. The cleaning made it an unnatural color. Note the deeper colors on the coin, it was probably even a lot darker then that at one time. At one time the devices were all there, the ear and cheek usually is the first thing to wear down.

If you weighed this coin is will be way under in weight because of the coin wear. If it were a Struck Through Grease error, then the weight would be normal. (3.11 grams)

I prefer to use images so you can see what I'm seeing. But on your coin, I didn't have images of an event like your coin. (almost 10K images and not one of these showing damage like your yours)

What makes you so sure this occurred before it left the mint?

Can you please answer this question?

I see plenty of evidence that In God We was there, you even posted multiple images of it.

This coin has no sign that United States of America or One Dollar ever existed. What kind of error is it?

Specifically it looks like what happens when you use a pencil eraser to clean an old, very worn cent.

Well that's very unfortunate that it was unprofessionally cleaned. The very first thing I learned was no matter what do not clean A coin yourself. Thanks for your input Its still pretty cool having a 90-year-old coin.

Bottom line: I'm guessing no one would give you more than Two Cents for this. Just a cull Wheat cent, I'm afraid.

It was normal when it was struck. These are often called a "pocket piece" that someone carried for luck for many years. Not a mint error, just an extremely worn coin.
